I'm thinking about trying a little crappie fishing at Lavon tomorrow. I'll probably put in at Highland Park or Bratonia Park and plan on fishing the trees. If anyone would like to meet me there, let me know.

I'm curious what others think about fishing for bass right after it stops raining. Good? Bad? Are the fish a bit shy? In the past i've usually had less success when fishing after hard rain so i'd like to hear some opinions on it. thanks

Fishing for opinions - best hard drive setup for compiling/writes

What is everyone's opinion on the best setup for a PC where the main target will be a programmer doing compiling of code?
I believe the main bottleneck for performance are hard drive speeds (correct me if I'm wrong) and since we are running standard 7200 RPM drives I am investigating better alternatives.

Fishing

Seeing as I have more than enough time on my hands this summer due to no work I'd like to go fishing. I spoke to some friends and there were conflicting opinions over when a permit is required. One said a rod with no reel does not need a licence. Another said if you use a rod with a reel and don't use a lure then you don't need a licence. I'm confused so a few questions... What is the rule? When do I need a licence? What can I do without a licence? Where can I get the licence from?

Alberta, A Fishing destination?

Just was thinking about fishing and fishing destinations and taking trips to go fishing.
If you lived in another province, would you travel to Alberta to go fishing, and for what fish in what area?
For example if you lived in Manatoba and wanted to do some river fishing for trout you may plan a trip to float and fish the Bow.

Cabin fever.. thinking about big pike

I'm new to northern AB. Moved here from Nova Scota/southern ont. No big pig in either place but even as a kid I used to dream and try so hard to get a monster pike. Fast forward to now... I'm in northern AB and buying a boat soon. Already picked out a new rod at the bass pro shops on line catalouge. Rod is specifically being bought for monster pike..
I will be hunting big pike most the summer. I'm a teacher so I'll have my July and August off with the hopes of fishing 5 days a week.

Want to try fly fishing - newbie questions

So last year I tried tubing and loved it. I'm thinking about trying fly fishing this year...
Is there any point in buying one of those fly fishing rod/reel combos at wally world or crappy tire to try it out? I never like spending a bunch of $$ (who does?) to find out I don't enjoy something. Or would it be the spincasting equivalent of fishing with a pool cue?
Thoughts? What should I be spending on my first set?
