Head wear for formal wear.
(20 Apr 2009)
My friend and I were discussing this today and I wanted some expert opinion. Neither her or I can recall a time where even the fanciest fedora was ever successfully paired with a tuxedo of either white tie or black tie. This also includes black or white tuxedos or dinner jackets. So I suppose what I am looking for here is opinions on...
~Can/should a fedora of any style be paired with formal or semi-formal wear (as often seen nowadays with guys trying to capture that "vintage" style)?

Should I use formal methods on my software project?
(09 Apr 2009)
Our client wants us to build a web-based, rich internet application for gathering software requirements. Basically it's a web-based case tool that follows a specific process for getting requirements from stakeholders. I'm the project manager and we're still in the early phases of the project.
I've been thinking about using formal methods to help clarify the requirements for the tool for both my client and the developers. By formal methods I mean some form of modeling, possibly something mathemat...

Poll: What we actually wear on formal nights on Carnival
(20 Jun 2009)
I saw this poll on Princess forum, and am curious to see what the results are on Carnival.
We have often seen opinions about what is worn or could be worn to the Main Dining Room . The Carnival Cruises dress code for formal nights is fairly clear.
Many posts are from a small set of persons with fairly strong viewpoints, and may not reflect what is actually done.
The intent of this poll is to see what the real statistics may be for a sample of Cruise Critic members who have sailed on Carnival Cru...

Formal Recruitment Tips for Alums
(15 May 2009)
Before the craziness of the fall Formal Recruitment season is upon us, I thought I'd post some things for alums to think about and to help plan ahead. The following is based on my experience from years of advising a chapter on a large, super competitive, SEC Recruitment campus. Obviously not all points will be relevant for every chapter or every campus.
Many of these points have been made in many different threads by many different people (myself included) over the years. I thought it would be b...

What's the importance of formal qualifications?
(12 Jun 2009)
Simply this is it:
A person writes a theory, or treatise on something that is well known to that person which has been worked on very hard even though that person has no formal qualifications.
What are the chances of getting published in a journal or something of that nature? General opinions or specialised opinions are welcome.
This is a hypothetical scenario.

After former Vice President Dick Cheney claimed during a Fox News Channel interview Monday night that he had formally asked the CIA to declassify memos which showed the success of using harsh interrogation practices such as waterboarding against detainees, Salons Glenn Greenwald wondered on his Twitter feed, What mechanism does Cheney have to formally ask the CIA to de-...

Thoughts on These Formal Pumps?
(08 May 2009)
All,
I've just purchased a white dinner jacket to wear on my honeymoon cruise formal dinner night. I'm having my tailor prepare in the most appropriate manner, but wanted to get some opinions on the appropriateness of these pumps as accompanying footwear. Please see links:

I'm very fond of these velvet pumps above but I'm concerned that they
aren't appropriate out of the house.

Formal Philosophy Tutorial
(10 Jun 2009)
What is Formal Philosophy?
Formal philosophy is the practice of employing mechanized, logical reasoning for settling philosophical disputes and aid in inquiry. The idea dates back to a Quote: due Leibniz:
Gottfried Wilhelm Quote: : If controversies were to arise, there would be no more need of disputation between two philosophers than between two accountants (Computistas). For it would suffice to take their pencils in their hands, to sit down to their slates (abacos), and to say to each other…:...
