Yea or nay on getting a veteran's plate on my truck?
(26 May 2009)
That time of year is coming around when I have to renew the MI plates on my F150.
I was in the Navy during the Lebanon, Beirut crisis in the early 80's and my ship provided naval gunfire support. I qualify for the MI Lebanon Conflict plate here;
http://services1.sos.state.mi.us/plates/vet-bb.htm
or
http://services1.sos.state.mi.us/plates/vet-sp.htm
I could also get just the plain Navy plate.
I'm kinda on the fence on these, or maybe just stay with a regular plate. Any opinions?

History listens stymied in Lebanon
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7988399.stm
Despite a long and varied history, classes on the subject are blinkered when taught in Lebanon, as the BBC's Natalia Antelava found out when she visited a school in the capital, Beirut.
Kristina and Ali sit side by side in their history class and together they learn about the Phoenicians and the Romans, the Greeks and the Ottomans.
But when it comes to Lebanon's more recent, turbulent past - their school teache...

Ukelele?
(24 Apr 2009)
As an avid guitar play (see nickname), I've been thinking about getting a ukulele to try my hand at it. There are some amazing ukulele players (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LrXlVPn0DI ). I'm a big fan of Beirut, and some rockers like Eddie Vedder have been known to use one as well. Question is, what do I look for, where do I start. I looked up ukuleles to find there are tenor, soprano, baritone, etc. variants, lots of different tunings... Anyone got any suggestions? Totally random thing t...

Pakistan Implodes
Alan Caruba
The wars going on in the Middle East will soon be the entire world’s next war as the fanatic Islamists throughout the region threaten to take over Pakistan and Afghanistan while continuing to wage war in Iraq. If they’re successful, India will be dragged into the full scale battle against the Taliban and al Qaeda. Where it spreads from there is anyone’s guess.
It is a battle between the 7th century of Islam and the 21st century of the rest of the world....

(15 Jun 2009)
If it were up to me, I would reject both Ahmedinejad and the theocratic regime of Iran. If I were an Iranian voter, I probably would have voted for Mousavi as the better alternative, as I did for Obama here.
Nevertheless:
I don't know if there was election fraud in Iran, and I can believe it as easily as I can believe that we are now witnessing a propaganda-by-Twitter "color revolution" aimed to engineer the perception that the election was fraudulent.
Even if the announced election results were...

Quote: Barack Obama's speech in Cairo was quite a moment. I say moment, but it lasted some 56 minutes and contained more than 6,000 words. Too long. Yes, he said a lot, ensuring to some extent that it could be all things to all people - almost everyone can take something away from it to feel good about.
That doesn't mean, however, that it was an effective speech. It was, of course, very well-delivered and contained many fine phrases. But we know that Obama can do this and he's subject to the law...

Fears of Yemen turning into another Afghanistan .
I'll admit, I hadn't heard anything about this. Some interesting stuff in the article.
Quote: : The United States shares the Saudis' fear. Gen. David Petraeus, head of the U.S. Central Command, told Congress in April that the weakness of Yemen's government provides al-Qaida a safe haven and that terror groups could "threaten Yemen's neighbors, especially Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states."
Yemen is the Arab world's poorest nation...

A Conversation with Robert D. Kaplan
There are few places in the world Robert D. Kaplan has not visited and written about in his books and magazine articles. He travels to countries hardly anyone else even considers – to Turkmenistan, for instance, during the time of the lunatic "Turkmenbashi" who transformed his post-Soviet republic into the North Korea of Central Asia. He has an uncanny ability to see conflicts looming on the horizon well in advance and – reversing the standard relationship be...
