Culture May Be Encoded in DNA
By Lizzie Buchen May 3, 2009
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/05/songbirdculture/
Knowledge is passed down directly from generation to generation in the animal kingdom as parents teach their children the things they will need to survive. But a new study has found that, even when the chain is broken, nature sometimes finds a way.
Zebra finches, which normally learn their complex courtship songs from their fathers, spontaneously developed the same songs all on t...

SD vs HD encoding comparison
(14 May 2009)
i was thinking about this next issue and came up with my explanation to it, however, i would like to hear expert's explanation.
i made an encode of an episode (16:9) from a PAL source without changing resolution at 2500kbps.
i made another encode of the same episode, but this time BluRay sourced, also without changing reolution (full hd) at 12500 kbps.
both encodes were done using the same insane settings (tesa, range 32, ...)
both BluRay and DVD, are superb sources. i suspected, that because fu...

Headroom - A Working Release
(05 May 2009)
"Headroom" is one of the last tracks to be included the "Miles Away" album. Very energetic (esp towards the end).
This track is 97% finish in my opinion, but that's the problem, I'm working on my opinion.
I need more. Let me know what you guys think about it. Yay or nay, thanks!
title: Headroom
album: Miles Away
encoded: 320 kbps

AVCHDCoder - MKV M2TS to AVCHD encoder. From input to ISO. Easy to use
(09 May 2009)
Let's introduce myself.
I am Twan Wintjes from the Netherlands. Currently I am still at school to be an Software Engineer. It is my second year at HBO (Something like High School I think)
About 5 months ago I had the idea to make my own tool for converting mkv to avchd. The reason was simple: I didn't really like other software. In my opinion they were not complete. At that time I used MediaCoder and there was always something I forgot. Also had to use other software to make it complete. It was...

Is encoding speed a very important factor for you?
(03 Jul 2009)
Hi,
the years come and go and I think, many of us switch their file based audio to a lossless source. My library is 90% lossless. I encode stuff to lossy for several target devices, which include a) wife's portable mp3 player, b) car audio devices, c) playback notebook in living room.
Having a lossless source as a base, I'm pretty relaxed about the choice of the lossy codec for the target devices. That being said, I can say my choice of the codec is mainly influenced by the encoding speed. I enc...

Best format to encode movies for PS3 ?
(07 Jun 2009)
I want to stream the content of my Media Center to my PS3. So far, it's working well with Tversity. I got all my pictures, my music.
The problem is videos. I got some in h264, it's working pretty well. But I got some DVDs in VideoTS folders. I can play individual VOB files but it's far from ideal.
What would be the best way to encode my dvds ? If I could keep the multiple language, it would be sweet. I was thinking about Divx with multiple audio tracks. I've read 1 comment that said it worked. B...

Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41
(10 Apr 2009)
As many of you will be aware, the US DVD of this one is out of print (I do prefer the longhand!) and commands ridiculous prices these days.
Now I believe that the UK DVD is actually a direct port of the OOP US DVD and is actually encoded for NTSC and opposed to PAL, in spite of the fact that the packaging claims that the video format is the latter. Can anyone who has the UK DVD confirm or deny this?
Oh, and since I haven't seen this one yet, what are your personal opinions of it?
I have only rec...

Gracenote and non detected CDs
(17 Apr 2009)
Hi,
I am a brand new user to dbpoweramp and got it because it was recommended by a number of Sonos users. I am using it to make MP3 and FLAC files at the same time and it works great but...
- I wonder why you're not using CDDB/Gracenote as one of the data sources. It is the most reliable I have found and it is even capable of figuring out what CDs are that I burned from the vinyl. (which amazes me)
- I am finding newish CDs (a few months old) that don't get identified at all by the *four* data s...
