Just looking for opinions
(13 Apr 2009)
I know he didn't have a choice in these medical conditions, however, he did have a choice in how he handled them. Now, he is really paying the consequences by the poor health and now a baby on the way that he can't really take care of. If I were you, I wouldn't let him be alone with your LO. Harsh maybe, but his track record isn't great. If you want him to have visitation, then it should be supervised, he shouldn't be alone with the baby. And, for sure he shouldn't be driving with the baby in th...

Our punitive health care system
(20 Jun 2009)
Malcolm Gladwell wrote an essay for the New Yorker in 2005 the describes the theory behind our current system of health care - moral hazard. This means that insurance can be used to control the behavior of people using the insurance.
Listening to the testimony before Congress yesterday, it is obvious that we have moved into a punitive system and are about ready to hand the insurance companies even more power. It's a great essay and helps explain why we are not being heard when we have expectatio...

Do not steal, scam items or share your account
Lost items will not be retrieved so be very careful about what you lend and to whom and about sharing your password which can result in stolen items. Anyone found guilty of scamming may be punished, but the items will not be returned. Trading away of gears on to another account will not be handled by GMs as long as there are no traces...

Suicide & Depression
(29 Apr 2009)
The "mental illness" topic made me really think about this.
Suicide, of course, is often seen as a permanant solution to a temporary problem, selfish, etc. What do you think of it? Have you ever been suicidal? Do you know someone who has committed suicide?
*Fact: 1 in 5 people are depressed. 1 in 5 depressed people commit suicide.
I'm just wondering what we know about depression and suicide in these forums. There are different types of diagnosed depression, like manic depression vs. clinical dep...

Steroids Hysteria
by John Stossel
With the return of baseball and a new book on Alex Rodriguez released this week, a fresh round of congressional posturing about steroids is upon us.
Why is it Congress's business?
I asked U.S. Reps. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., about that for my next TV special, "Don't Even Think about Saying That!," which will air this Frid...

Why Economists Failed to Predict the Financial Crisis
Published: May 13, 2009 in Knowledge@Wharton
There is a long list of professions that failed to see the financial crisis brewing. Wall Street bankers and deal-makers top it, but banking regulators are on it as well, along with the Federal Reserve. Politicians and journalists have shared the blame, as have mortgage lenders and even real estate agents.
But what abo...

Media Matters

Media Matters
For years, liberals have been telling us that screen scenes depicting gratuitous sex, sadism, nihilism, despair, violence, militant secularism, and blasphemy have little or no effect on the opinions and behavior of viewers. Those who make these claims are some of the same people who worked with relentless abandon to stop a cigarette company from using Joe Camel in its advertisements. They claimed that the cartoonish character would appeal to young people and encourage them to smoke...

Preventing Child Abuse in Judo
(07 Jun 2009)
Hello - This may be helpful for some wanting more information on this topic. I pulled from the most current literature in the field of child abuse in sport. The document is rough as I couldn't spend much more time on it due to personal projects. Please excuse the formatting. Additionally, as time permits, I will add superscripts so that it is referenced correctly. This topic and discussion is long overdue and I hope that I can contribute to information sharing. Wishing you all a wonderful weeken...

A Radical Idea. Discuss. Warning: Lotta Reading.
(28 May 2009)
I have heard this idea batted around for quite some time now. Like most reading this right now, my knee-jerk reaction was "that's insane." However, after reading Bill Simmons and Malcolm Gladwell discuss the matter in-depth on ESPN dot com...I don't feel that way anymore. I'm not sure if I agree, but I think it's at least worth thinking about.
Either abolish the drafts in sports outright, or change the format to a random lottery to decide pick order.
Sounds insane...until you think about it a li...
