Garageband '08 Incredibly Sluggish all
(02 Jul 2009)
I'm running 3 real instrument tracks and one software track (controlled with musical typing) and I'm trying to record a scratch vocal using the built-in mic.
The song is a little over 3 minutes long. When I hit record, the program "thinks" for about 3 minutes, then it begins recording. As soon as the software track begins at measure 5, I get a message saying only part of my song can be played. Then it stops recording and there's nothing I can do.
I have used this program and it's previous versio...

Switch from iBook to Macbook?
(28 Jun 2009)
My 13-year old just got his report card for his first year in a new school and did really well - so I'm thinking about getting him a new computer. I could use your advice . . .
He now has a 1.33 GHz 14" iBook G4, with an 80 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, and superdrive. Running Tiger. It had extended applecare, which ended a year ago, and it was serviced just before it ended. The battery has 110 cycles.
Available for sale is the following: Intel Core Duo 2 GHz Macbook (mid-late '06?), with 250GB HDD, 2GB RA...

Some Questions about Direct2Drive
(23 May 2009)
I was thinking about buying The Sims 3 for my Mac over Direct2Drive, but I have some qualms about using the service. If any of you have used it, I would like to know:
1. Do games seem to run at about the same performance without a disc?
2. If they don't, is it that noticeable? I was going to be using it on a MacBook Pro, which, from what I've heard, can run the game quite easily. It's just easier for me to go portable without lugging around any cases or discs. Sam & Max seemed to work fine on my...

Vista Media Center, OR, XP Media Center? Which is the better choice?
(28 Apr 2009)
I've been setting up a computer to be a media hub in my house.
Currently I've got Windows XP SP3 as the operating system.
We've been watching a lot of hulu, and now streaming netflix, etc. . .
Also using it to look at pics, listen to music.
I want to have Windows Media Center.
The question is should I go w/ Vista Home Premium, or get XP Media Center Edition, which I've found is still readily available.
I have an Intel Core Duo 1.8Ghz, and 2GB of DDR2 (1066 I believe), and a nVidia 9600GT 512MB G...

Terrible FPS. What card should I buy for TF2?
(11 Jun 2009)
I have TF2 installed on two of my computers, an old one and a newer one.
My newest computer is a macbook pro which runs Windows but has a pretty crappy video card, I think (I don't really know what will run TF2 better at this point). It has an GeForce 8600m GT card and 4 gigs of ram.
Now, my old PC's specs are as follows,
512MB ram, 260g HD, GeForce 5600.
It runs TF2 really well. I get excellent FPS but the character models look really strange. They have like zero detail.
Still, I can't play wel...

RAM upgrade for my Mini
(03 Jun 2009)
So I'm thinking about chucking out some money to buy an upgrade for my Mac Mini due to being tired of straggling by on 512 MB. My computer is a Mac Mini 1.83 GHZ Intel Core Duo w/512 MB RAM and 80 GB Hard drive - 64 MB GMA 950(shared, as I'm sure you know).
Anyway, my areas of interest are Cocoa dev and Game dev(3D and 2D in the future). My question is: will getting an upgrade help me? Currently, my computer runs slow when having Safari, iTunes, Interface Builder, and XCode all open at once . It...

Assistance with Colormunki and Macbook Pro (old one)
(08 May 2009)
I'm hoping there are some Mac color gurus out there who can help me calibration my laptop screen with my new toy. I had great results with my Huey but my new x-rite ColorMunki is leaving me feeling green... I am a Mac and PC owner who has more intimate knowledge on the PC color management than with a Mac.
I have been using my Macbook Pro 15" For about three years now. This is one of the first versions with the specs 2 gHz Intel Core Duo and maxed out 2GB of 677mHz DDR2 SDRAM... I did pick up the...
