heating before the fight techniques
(18 May 2009)
Do you know that heat converts to energy. It can either be release or conserved. When you hold somebody or something with your naked hands, heat is transfered to the object you are holding. That heat comes from your body, If you hold your chicken with your naked hand and even place the chicken near your body, you are transfering the heat from your body towards the chicken which will thereby weaken your chicken. This theory is true and what shall we do to avoid the effect of heat transfer in the...

Oh, my achin' back. Heating pad or icepack?
(09 Apr 2009)
Let me tell you, kids.
Getting old ain't for sissies.
Had to change a tire Monday.
I used to do that without even thinking about it.
Pulled a muscle in lower right back, just above the hip.
They say when you work a muscle you haven't worked in a while, the 3rd day is the worst for pain.
When you're in your late 60s, the 4th day is the worst.
I hope.
I've used a heating pad for the last 3 days.
Now I'm trying an icepack.
Damn.

Renewable heating systems??
(09 Jun 2009)
Hi,
Hoping to start building a new 3500 sq ft house shortly and trying to decide the best way forward with regards to heating systems. Its starting to wreck my head at this stage. I hope to achieve the following u-values, and would prefer to spend more on the insulation and less on the heating
Walls - 0.15
Ground Floor - 0.12
Roof - 0.13
Windows - 1.3
I am going with undefloor heating throughout but when it comes to deciding on a heat pump, I am undecided and would appreciate any feedback / opin...

tiling - porcelain tiles on underfloor heating
(21 May 2009)
I want to lay porcelain tiles on a concrete floor over underfloor heating.
The floor isn't perfectly level, and I'm wondering about using either leveling compound or just laying a thicker bed of flexible adhesive as recommended by the builder.
Can anyone give advice and/or opinions on the max depth I should use for the adhesive?
Thanks

Soil Heating Systems
(10 Jun 2009)
Anyone know anyone that has a heating system for their soil?
Probably not,but last night I was randomly thinking about what it would take to keep the grass green deep into winter and the only thing I thought of was to keep the soil warm.
Professional sports teams who have natural grass have these systems in place in the stadiums and practice facility to aid in growth year round.here is an article I found on the Denver Broncos field....

Underfloor heating and Oil boiler.
(24 Jun 2009)
I'm hoping to get a bit of information on this and hopefully a few people's experiences
I'm in the middle of constructing my house. ItÂ’s a 3500 sq/feet two story house. Next step is to decide on our heating system.
I was planning on going under floor and geo thermal but the more I look into it and the more prices I get the less I'm convinced.
I don't like the idea of all the pipes in the garden (600 meters) plus it will work out at least 15 grand more than an oil boiler. What is the implication...

Air circulation duct for heating
(27 May 2009)
We've got a wood fire in our lounge room and I'm thinking about installing an air circulation duct to try and move a bit of the heat around the rest of the house. Just wondering if anyone has tried this and what the results were.
You can buy a kit which consist of an inline fine, an inlet and outlet grill and some insulated duct. The idea is to install the inlet over the fire and run the duct to the far end of the house. The fan should then draw warm air from over the fire and pump it to the col...

Wall insulation question? + heating
(21 May 2009)
hi Folks
i have speced a 150mm cavity, with a 150mm Full Fill Certainfill Graphite 27 plus. this is supposed to give a U Value of 0.20 in the wall.
some people have since recommended that i also install an inner leaf insulation board form kingspan or similar (excuse my definitions). basically further insulation on the inside walls.
i think this is over the top, but opinions very welcome.
secondly has anyone ever used geothermal heat pump with a supporing oil boiler for very cold periods? some su...
