Why do we need multiple American newspapers with foreign bureaus?
(11 May 2009)
Why do we need multiple American newspapers with foreign bureaus?
I listened to an NPR talk show today where a speaker lamented the state of U.S. newspapers and how the ones that weren't shutting down were cutting staff drastically and that several papers like the Boston Globe (and others) didn't even have foreign bureaus or correspondents any more.
In the midst of my commiserating, a little voice in my head asked: Well, how many U.S. newspapers need foreign bureaus, anyway?
I'm a voracious read...

No Bailout for Newspapers
(05 May 2009)
Quote: :
No bailout for newspaper industry: White House
The White House on Monday expressed "concern" and "sadness" over the state of the ailing US newspaper industry, but made clear that a government bailout was not in the cards.
"I don't know what, in all honesty, government can do about it," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters. "That might be a bit of a tricky area to get into given the differing roles."
Gibbs was responding to a reporter who asked what the White House thought a...

Newspapers are valuable
(11 Jun 2009)
There would be no need for this if the newspapers had not chosen the Democrats to support and thrown away 40% of their market. I could make any newspaper important to every adult in any area by simply having all viewpoints expressed and insisting my reporters stuck to, "Who, What, When, Where and Why," the first, and only, commandment of journalism. This newspaper will not run my material because I put forth a conservative viewpoint.
A new media is developing in which I am taking part. My list i...

Daily newspapers reinvent selves almost daily as economy, marke...
(26 Apr 2009)
I'm tired of Rosenthal's rants on the demise of newspapers. Why doesn't he recognize the facts. The population is increasing; newspaper subscribers are decreasing; people don't see any value in reading a newspaper anymore. It is a poor product. The newspaper is now a supermarket tabloid. You can't believe anything you read. And opinions ... who wants the opinion of a journalist who is on the low end of the educational scale? Engineers created spell checkers for journalists who couldn't spell and...

Newspapers: The Next Industry That's Too Big to Fail?
(22 May 2009)
The Next Industry That's Too Big to Fail?
By Alyce Lomax
Bailout fever has hit the U.S., and we're all well aware of how government funds have been propping up entities that are considered "too big to fail," like AIG (NYSE: AIG), Fannie and Freddie, and General Motors (NYSE: GM). However, the most recent industry to get some government love may be the newspaper industry.
I don't believe in bailouts at all and have been staunchly opposed to the government funds directed to the financial and autom...

What do you think about Kindle ?
(07 May 2009)
Hello everyone.
I have just read that Amazon is lauching a big-screen version of its Kindle ( Kindle DX ). They are saying it is a version which is better for reading newspapers and books with a built-in PDF reader.
Do you think it will be a good buy? Like we can bring all of the electronic books we have (whether the kindle version of textbooks bought from Amazon or ebooks in pdf format) and not have to deal with the often heavy and bulky textbooks.
Anyone already using kindle for wards? How is...

something to think about
(03 May 2009)
Quote: : Not long ago, sports writer Selena Roberts compared the Duke lacrosse players to gang members and career criminals.
She claimed that the playersÂ’ unwillingness to confess to or snitch about a rape (that did not happen) was the equivalent of drug dealers and gang members promoting antisnitching campaigns.
When since-disgraced district attorney Mike Nifong whipped up a media posse to rain justice on the drunken, male college students, Roberts jumped on the fastest, most influential horse,...

Local Newspapers...
(16 Jun 2009)
While back north a few weeks ago and visiting some kin folks, I glanced
at the local a.m. newspaper from a town about our size here in T.V. and realized the paper had deminished into a ten page uninteresting read.
It got me to thinking about our local paper here in T.V. and how many news items and local events are well covered.
Some of our favorite pages are the puzzles, to keep our brain cells connecting and active, the front pages of world news along with all the local to-dos in another sectio...

Serously thinking about moving, some questions - Columbus
(24 Jun 2009)
Hello,
We are seriously thinking about moving to Columbus, OH from Miami, FL.
Main reason, cost of living and we are not much of a beach crowd anyways.
I have some questions
1) What is the tolerance towards latins? I am not the typical latin in many ways, but a look at me and you'll know I am not exactly from Russia. And my accent is still a little thick.
2) Do you know what is the job outlook for business analyst? Is monster.com the best place to look?
3) How is the availability to alternative...
