Tell me if someone has ever made little info cards to give to the homeless...
(25 Jun 2009)
Ok, maybe this is a really stupid (or obvious) idea, but as most people living in cities, I regularly see the homeless. I know there are differing opinions on homelessness and what to do about it, but the fact that many of them are veterans and/or mentally ill connects with me.
I don't like to give money, though. Sometimes I give food. Often I donate or volunteer at non-profits that help the homeless.
A recurring idea I've had is to print up little cards (possibly laminated to last longer) that...

Chronically homeless
(22 Apr 2009)
Quote: : A $4 million proposal would put a roof over the heads of the homeless.
Minnehaha County officials presented plans to the city council Monday night for a 32 bed facility to house the homeless. But some council members are concerned the use of taxpayer money would only add to the problem.
The new building would house the chronically homeless in Sioux Falls and sit at 3rd Street and Minnesota Avenue, just across the street from the Law Enforcement Center. It's a plan supporters say would s...

Jennifer Jenkins took a break between her third and fourth years of medical school to practice what is called "street medicine" with an organization in Pittsburgh. She made "house calls" on the streets, handing out medicine, socks and sandwiches. And she was glad to do it. Jenkins, 35, was once there herself.
"There's nothing special about me," says Jenkins, sitting i...

Homeless in Brisbane
(28 Jun 2009)
Last night we ran out of dog food so I went to 7-11 (Coles and Woolies had closed). Outside 7-11 was a bloke lying on the footpath. He was well-dressed (jeans, shirt, jacket, beanie, shoes etc) and had a blanket and pillow, as well as a cup of coffee and a doughnut, I assume from 7-11, and looked set for a cold night in Brissie. I was a bit surprised as I haven't seen any homeless people in our relatively affluent suburb before, but went inside and bought my stuff, which probably cost enougfh to...

Definition Of Homelessness
(25 May 2009)
I have heard many say losing their home makes them homeless even if they rent or stay with friends. I know someone that lost her home (again - a pattern on not paying bills) and tells everyone she is homeless and get them to help but in reality she has full rein of her sister's house, her own room, is fed etc.
What is your opinion. I help the homeless and to me that is those seeking shelter at the rescue mission, living in tents, on the river, et al.
I was told I'm wrong.

Soon to be homeless?!
(09 May 2009)
I arrived home last night to find a "for sale by owner" sign in the yard of my rented duplex. Landlord approached me a month or so ago about buying it at a very inflated price and I told him I wasn't interested, but to please let me know when he was planning on putting it on the market so I could look for another place.
Guess the sign was his way of letting me know.
I've been looking hard for a place since he brought it up - so this wasn't a total surprise. Problem is, so many people h...

I'm Homeless!!!!
(25 May 2009)
Please keep me in your prayers! My mother threw me out of the house . She said she does not want to deal with me because I complain too much. Expressing my opinion about a movie or a person is considered complaining. My father also mocks me about everything (my nationality, my faith, my interests etc.) and because I don't like this is another reason. I have no job but I am looking. I am only 20 with no work experience and this fact is making it harder for me to find a job. I have a place to stay...

May 20 - Another 'Slumdog' star now homeless

Bulldozers flattened the home of another Slumdog Millionaire actor in the Garib Nagar section of Mumbai. According to the Associated Press, 9 year-old Rubina Ali, who played Freida Pinto's character as a young street orphan, is homeless after city officials demolished her parents' shanty home. "I'm feeling bad," Ali told the AP. " I'm thinking about where to sleep." Last week, the home of Ali's...

Homeless folk.
(27 Jun 2009)
I was wondering about people's opinions of homeless people on the street who ask for change. I met a few today, which is what made me start thinking about it.
Here's how I feel:
If someone asks me for change, I will always treat them like a human being and make a contribution if I can. I feel good about doing this, but the majority of people I know have never tried to make me feel anything but bad about it. They tell me things like "those people are faking, they're not really homeless" or "they'...
