Linux partition - how much space?
(02 Jul 2009)
Hi. I'm thinking about creating a Linux partition for dual boot/VM, basically to mess around and maybe learn about Linux so it's nothing tooo serious. I won't need to have apps on the partition unless that's recommended or necessary. I would probably install most non-Linux-only apps on my Windows partition and hopefully be able to use them from Linux, if not I could put things on a 'storage' partition. How much HD space should I devote to a Linux partition for this purpose?

Your HDD / Partition Setup?
(27 Jun 2009)
I am very interested in how others have organized there system's storage for there needs.
I am thinking of upgrading to a single =>1TB HDD instead of a RAID setup and wonder if there would be a major performance decrease? Oddly its cheaper then getting 2 500GB HDD and sticking them in a RAID.
My setup is:
2 x 250GB HDDs in RAID 0
Partitions: 30GB for XP Pro x64
30GB for My Documents
50GB for Programs
200GB for Games
155GB for General Storage
(ps i know it does not add up to 500GB)
1 x 80GB HD...

Partition 30-GB SSD; Ubuntu, Virtualbox, and Win7
(20 Jun 2009)
I am planning a new system which will include a 30 GB SSD and a 1.5 TB HDD. I want to partition the 30 GB SSD so that Ubuntu is the host and Windows 7 is the guest. I have been thinking about how to do this and have come up with the following steps. Has anybody tried something similar?
1. Format the SSD using the Windows 7 installer and create a
16-GB Primary boot partition; do not install Windows 7 but
install the NTFS file system
2. Use the Ubuntu Partman utility to create two more Primary

/boot Partition?
(06 Jun 2009)
Ok, I like playing around with multiple operating systems so I tend to have a few installed at a time. My issue is related to the bootloader. Every new Linux OS I install installs its own version of Grub. That's fine until you delete that partition....
I was thinking about creating a small (ie ~50MB) partition that /boot will reside on. This way I can have one copy of Grub that would boot my several OS(s) depending on what they are. I think this is a good idea so I can delete one OS's partition...

Thinking about migrating to Ubuntu, a few questions
(25 Apr 2009)
I've played with Ubuntu and other UNIX variants on a number of occasions over the years, so I'm not a complete newbie, but I have a few questions as I am considering altering the setup of my primary PC to have Ubuntu as my primary OS.
1) Should a 19 or 20GB partition be enough for Ubuntu? I have a separate partition that I will keep my data on, FAT32 most likely (unless Ubuntu can reliably write to NTFS now) as I will still have Win2k as a backup and games OS.
I have three partitions on my 400GB...

Opinions on this setup
(05 May 2009)
I'm more of a software guy than a hardware guy, so I was wondering if some of you guys could be kind enough to take a look at this setup and tell me what you think about specs vs price. I'd be running Fedora with an XP partition. It'd be used mostly for coding (nothing too graphics heavy at the moment but I'd like to have that option available), random school work, watching movies, occasional gaming (Oblivion/CoD4), and just general internet stuff.
Any opinions? Thanks!
EDIT: damn, forgot to pos...

How to redirect folders to another partition?
(20 Jun 2009)
im thinking about buying an SSD, but worried about the writes going to be done by the operating system.
anyone know how to re-direct system folders to another partition?
those system folders include:
-c:\Program Data in Vista and 7
-c:\windows\temp
-c:\users (the whole folder, including AppData)
-anything else you guys may think of.?
for c:\users i have found this long guide which sounds like it will work.
for c:\windows\temp, it's changing the environment variables TEMP, TMP to appropriate loca...

partitioning question
(17 Jun 2009)
Sorry, I don't know if this would be called a Vista question per-say. I have a Vista laptop and am thinking about duel booting it. So if I make another partition for that but then later the other OS doesn't work, or I change my mind or something, I'm thinking I can just delete the new partition right? Without messing up anything on the Vista partition? I'd probably be using Acronis Disk Director Suite.
