use of laptop hard drives in raid 5 array for WHS system drive. opinions ...
(02 Jul 2009)
one thing i don't like about WHS is the lack of failure protection for the system drive. if the system drive dies the WHS is toast.
i have an adaptec 3805 hardware raid card ( 8 x internal SAS/SATA ), and am considering putting the OS on a raid 5 array. doesn't need to be be particularly big in capacity, but small in physical volume occupied by the drives and low power consumption.
to this end i am considering a supermicro 8 2.5inch drives into 2 5.25inch bay module, and a set of seagate 7200.3...

pcie 1x fast enough for raid array?
(05 May 2009)
I have a Rampage formula board and am currently using the ICH9R for a 3 disc raid 5 array (all 1TB discs). I'm thinking about buying a seperate raid controller, for better performance and less rebuilds after crashes (the ICH9R has no memory, battery i.e.).
The board has 3x PCI-e 1x and 2x PCI-e 16x. I might go crossfire in the future with my 4870 so I will have to use a pci-e 1x lane for a raid controller.
Is that going to be fast enough for my array? Or will it bottleneck the controller?
I've r...

fork and multi-core array multiplication
(26 Jun 2009)
Thinking about this problem made me realize that we need a method to communicate at least a little data between the parent and child processes. Here's why:
If you only have a parent and one child, you can split the array in the middle and let the parent take the first half and the child the second, or vice versa. However, if you want to allow an arbitrary number of cores (I think that cdf is an 8-core machine, for example), this is not so easy. When a child starts working after a fork, it n...

C array is displaying garbage data (memory problems?)
(08 Apr 2009)
I'm making a driver for an 8x8 LED matrix that I'm driving from a computer's parallel port. It's meant to be a clock, inspired by a design I saw on Tokyoflash.
Part of the driver is an array of 3*5 number "sprites" that are drawn to the matrix. A coordinate of the matrix is assigned to a coordinate of the sprite and so forth, until the entire sprite is drawn on it. This process is repeated for the other digit with an offset. I have verified I have drawn the sprites correctly, and that the matrix...

Thinking about naming of utility classes in java
(17 May 2009)
I am looking for naming guidlines for non functional (utility) extensions of the common classes.
In c# I used to use some of this:
1) ListExtensions, too long but with extension methods ListExtensions never appears. Usage is just. var productList = new List(); productList.MyExtendedMehod();
2) ListHelpers. This was in old C# 2.0 era, usage is ListHelpers.MyExtendedMethod(productList );
Now I am diving with java. What I have learned is Collections, Arrays classes. So how do you name your helper c...

unknown array size + dynamic memory allocation - C
(01 Jun 2009)
so guys, i was thinking about finding a way to create arrays, without knowing their size.
for example
create an app that takes unsigned long values until EOF and just saves them to an unknown size array.
i was thinking that, because the array size could be big, to create the array using dynamic memory allocation.
so here is my code which is NOT correct thats why i need your help
Help with Code Tags ( Toggle Plain Text ) #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> int main(){ unsigned long...

Opinions on my Form class
(28 May 2009)
Hi,
I hope it is ok to ask for opinions.
But this is a good way of learning for me.
Anyway, what do you people think about my class to handle form data.
Flexible enough? readable? ect...

"Usul": 4 x AE-IB15 line array IB sub; Mike R HT
(22 May 2009)
I have a very detailed/"real time" build thread at The IB Cult forum - it's in my signature here, however I want to post here my finished product for the Master Index of DIY Subwoofer Projects thread.
Since my 12 page build thread at the The IB Cult forum requires login/password, I was asked by "LTD02" to post a thread here, this will be "cliff notes" version of that 1+ year journey.
For those considering IB subs:
Read ThomasW IB FAQ a few times http://home.comcast.net/~infinitelybaffled/index.h...
