Sony VAIO repairs - your opinions please - Broadband
(20 Apr 2009)
OK so the wife's VAIO (SZ2GP) is about 4 years old. The battery died last night and the cooling van sounds like my AMG's V8. I suspect its also on its way out.
A new battery costs around R2k, and the fan job probably another R1.5K, totalling R3.5K.
A new VAIO would set her back between R16 & R23K (model dependent), and times are tough. Should I spend the R3.5K on the repairs to "resurrect" a 4 year old machine or should I look around for other less expensive notebook brands than Sony. Or should...

Footwell repairs
(27 May 2009)
After some tinkering this afternoon with the 90, I took the passenger footwell out with the intention of repairing it. I've got a rough idea of what I was going to do, but I'm interested in other people's views/opinions before I start the repairs.

My idea was to cut away the rest of the rust from the footwell panel in the picture, then either rivet or weld a new piece of plate bent for the bottom footwell piece to bolt to. Am I right in saying th...

Buildings Insurance, roof repairs & freehold purchase
(06 Jul 2009)
We are in the process of buying a flat (in a building of 8) with 74 years remaining on its lease. Several issues have come to light causing our solicitors to advise caution in proceeding with the purchase:
The landlord is unwilling to provide a copy of the buildings insurance – it appears that one may go and view the original at his convenience and this has been difficult to arrange. We would need a copy to comply with our mortgage. Survey has identified that some serious repairs (fortunately no...

RoachMobile in need of repairs...
(27 May 2009)
1. plugged cat
2. T-case linkage is tweaked, so it wont go into 4wd...just 2low (np321 w/sye)
3. rear diff leak (need to install diff covers anyway)
4. front locker is eating itself (lockright) just ratchets...only used it 5 or 6 times, lightly
I think that's about all for now...aside from wanted upgrades

School opinions needed
(14 Apr 2009)
I am considering going to a gunsmithing school and have a few questions. I am thinking about going to the Colorado School of Trades and am wondering what you guys think about them and/or maybe some other school. I would ultimately like to work in a custom rifle shop but know that there is not a great demand for rookies in that field, and I am more likely to be doing just general repairs. I am also thinking about working for a manufacturer. Just looking for opinions/advice from some of you guys t...

Thinking about jumping into STS(2)
(30 Apr 2009)
So as the title state I've recently been considering trying to pick up a miata and go play in STS, or possibly ES. I figured this would be the best place to start asking questions so here goes.
How much should I think about paying? Im ok with buying either a prepped car or something thats still stock and doing the work myself, so what should I expect to budget for either scenario?
Are there anything in particular I should pay attention to when finding a good miata? This won't be a daily driver a...

Thinking about E38, 7-series LSx swap
(29 Jun 2009)
Ever since the James Bond Movie, Tommorow Never Dies, I've sorta had a thing for the big bimmer. E38's can actually be found really cheap, especially if its one with transmission problems, or a bad motor. Seems like the costs for major repairs, exceeds the value of the vehicle.
Granted the car isn't particularly suited for motorsport, but I've been pondering the idea of a fun to drive family limo.
I'm thinking there should be plenty of real estate under the hood, since the car came with either a...

Thinking about selling the G35 for a 2000 740iL - your thoughts / experience...
(08 May 2009)
I have always been a fan of the E38 bimmer. Love the somewhat boxyness and love the lines. The G35 is great, but I now have a 1975 Datsun 280Z with an SR20det under the bonnet. So I now have two sport cars (and a jeep, cant forget the jeep) and like I said, Ive always loved the 740. So my buddy recently bought one. Black with black interior. Gorgeous car and is one of the most comfortable cars I've ever ridden in. I have a friend who imports and exports cars. And he goes to a lot of dealer only...

Need a car [Used] - Thinking about a Volvo - is this a good choice?
(26 May 2009)
Nothing to do with radio.... I need to get another car. My 1994 Lincoln with 200k miles is going to my 18 year old so he can have something safe and sturdy. I've been needing to get a replacement anyway...
I usually like to go American, by the way, but there haven't been too many good offerings in the used market lately. I already have an F350 Ford and the Lincoln.
Am looking for something really sturdy, but with better gas economy than the old Lincoln. Have been considering Saab and Volvo...
