I was thinking about visiting one of my friends at CalPoly SLO this week and dropping by Oceano Dunes at Pismo Beach. What are the worst case scenarios that can happen when driving on sand? Any tips or suggestions? I have no experience with it so any information would be helpful.

Well maybe not 24hrs but... My wife is taking the kid to visit her parents so I have a Saturday and Sunday free next weekend. This will probably be my only chance to go anywhere overnight for a while. I'm thinking about riding up the coast from LA to Carmel. My initial thought would be to take the 101 to Pismo Beach and then the 1 up to Carmel. Google estimates this as 6 1/2 hours but that's driving straight through. You can buy single drives that are 1TB externals, so I would not go with a dual drive external just to get a RAID. A single drive is more reliable than a RAID (as long as you back it up) and RAIDs still need to be backed up.
