1. Does photoshop use multi cores? And graphic card?   (11 Jun 2009)
Hi All Just another quick question, I have been asked to put a pc together for some one that will be using photoshop a lot. My question is, does photoshop make use of multi core processors? Or will it just use one core of the four? Is it worth getting a quad for photoshop? Also while im thinking about it, what graphic card do i put in? Does photshop use any power from the grahic card? Is it worth getting an expensive graphic card for photoshop? He uses CS3. Thanks

2. FAH not using all cores   (16 Jun 2009)
Iam thinking about going back to folding with my quad core, iam aware theres 54611 different guides for this and I followed all those I can find on here for the SMP client and iam only getting 25% CPU usage and its going very slow. I know when I used the same SMP long time ago it had both cores maxed, now its only using 1 core.. why? Its clearly stated SMP is for multicore systems..

3. As many cores and as much ram as possible for £400-£500   (26 May 2009)
Hey, I am looking to build two machines with as many CPU's / cores possible with as much ram as possible for £1500 each. The dont need any fancy graphics card or sound card, and will both be running Linux so the cost of an OS does not need to be factored in. I have looked in the obvious places my self, but it is always good to get opinions from different people! Cheers, Paul

4. Thinking about Upgrading my Processor...   (04 May 2009)
Right now I have an ASUS P5LP-LE, which supports an LGA-775 Socket-Type for a processor. Currently, I have a Pentium D 940 in my machine. 3.2GHz dual core processor... Nothing fancy, but workable for gaming. If I were to upgrade to a newer Dual Core, or even a Quad Core CPU, how much of a performance increase could I expect? I know not many games currently make use of all four cores in a Quad, so I'm slightly leaning towards a Core 2 right now. Looking on Newegg, I see a few options for what I c...

5. Thinking about getting Windows 7?   (04 May 2009)
If you are planning on installing Windows 7, here's a little something that may affect the CPU purchase you intend to run it on. Intel has a confusing array of CPUs and not all of them will support the "XP Mode Virtualization" feature in Windows 7. This means if you pick the wrong CPU,. XP mode WILL NOT WORK! TO make a bad situation even worse, Intel plans on upgrading some models so it'll depend on the actual stepping of the CPU model whether or not XP Mode Virtualization will work or not. Here...

6. OpenCores CAN/Ethernet cores   (07 May 2009)
On Thu, 7 May 2009 19:53:36 +0000 (UTC), Jukka Marin <jmarin@pyy.embedtronics.fi Dear All, I'm wondering whether to use 10/100 Ethernet and CAN controller chips (two of each) in a new design or just put cores from OpenCores inside an FPGA (which we will need in both cases). I'm (still) new to FPGA's and have never used cores from OpenCores. Has anybody used these cores? Are they reliable and ready for production use? The third alternative is to buy commercial IP blocks, but I'm afraid...

7. Opinions About Upgrading...   (07 Jun 2009)
I'm interested in your opions since some of my items are +6 in 8 cores or so and some after 70 cores still +3. I know it happens alot more Please vote in the poll No flaming please, it is unnecessary. thanks

8. Realtek 889A, opinions   (26 Jun 2009)
In the past I learned that on-board sound even if clean usually cost a noticeable frame rate reduction...it seems with dual+ cores this is not an issue. My problem is almost all new motherboards I am looking at to go to a e8400 or Phenom 550/720 are limited to two PCI slots. I have a PCI SCSI card, wireless, and my soundcard. However they seem to have the higher-end Realtek 889A built in. To go PCI-E on the SCSI will be brain damage...the wireless or audio option will cost $50-70 roughly which w...

9. fork and multi-core array multiplication   (26 Jun 2009)
Thinking about this problem made me realize that we need a method to communicate at least a little data between the parent and child processes.  Here's why:   If you only have a parent and one child, you can split the array in the middle and let the parent take the first half and the child the second, or vice versa.  However, if you want to allow an arbitrary number of cores (I think that cdf is an 8-core machine, for example), this is not so easy.  When a child starts working after a fork, it n...

10. I'm thinking about buying myself a laptop....opinions please   (21 May 2009)
And don't tell me to buy a Mac I know NOTHING about them at all! What I'm looking at is an HP with: Operating system Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit) Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T6400 (2.0GHz) Memory 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) Hard drive 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive Graphics card Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD Display 15.6" diagonal High Definition HP Brightview Display (1366x768) Primary optical drive LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD...
