Irish tourists abroad

Hi - just looking for people's thoughts and opinions on Irish people who travel. Having returned from South America recently and a couple of years down under, here are some very general observations
1) My first observation is that per capita, we seem to holiday in far flung places FAR more than any other nation. E.g. stayed on a remote island in Fiji and about 30% of the people were Irish. Every hostel in South America has Irish people in them.

Fellow Tourists need to spread the word that Jalisco is OK

The swine flu never hit Jalisco. All precautions that were taken by the Mexican Govt stopped the spread of it. The workers in PV are suffering due to the loss of tourism from the economic state in the US and Canada and due to the Swine Flu. Unfortunately several people I speak with in our social circle, work, bus mates etc all speak negatively about Mexico now. Manhattan - best ICHG hotel for tourists?

So, as a brit, I'm looking at a 4 night stay on rewards in the autumn- I love the look of the CP in Times square but would welcome any feedback from others. I'm looking for a room in a nicer area, close to the metro and possibly offering an upgrade with platinum membership (I know I'm not entitled. but some places in the UK still offer this) I also like the look of paying 60$ and saving 10000 points- something I'll think about.

New Business in St. Lucia - Opinions?

Just returned from St. Lucia and it looks like we are going to move forward with our dream of owning a small local Rum Shop and make it into a cool place where "both" the local professionals and visiting tourists can be comfortable. '73 Varsity Sport -> Varsity Tourist

Okay, I know there was no such thing as a Schwinn Varsity Tourist in 1973, but the difference between a Collegiate Sport and a Collegiate Tourist was the upright handlebars. So a Varsity Tourist would be the same thing as a Collegiate Tourist, only with 10 speeds. (Maybe that makes it a Suburban, but the frame says "Varsity"!)
Anyway, I've been thinking about putting upright handlebars on my Varsity and started on the task tonight. First I had to clean up the donor bars from a nasty Huffy I pick...

Seattle or San Juan Island Tourist Ride?

I am a fellow BFer from the SF area. I will be visiting Seattle in July and would like to rent a tandem and take a ride. I will not have a way to transport the tandem, so the ride will need to start from the rental place. Target length would be about 25-35 miles, depending on the elevation gain (flatter is better, but 2000 or so feet of climbing would be OK).
Any tips or ideas?

Cancun to Playa Del Carmen by rental car - Cancun

We will be in Cancun in February (second trip). Thinking about renting a car in Cancun and driving to PDC for the day. Never drove in Mexico before but heard a few "horror stories" about tourists being pulled over and scammed by Mexican traffic cops for phoney speeding charges and ordered to pay cash on the spot "or else." Any advice from seasoned Cancun visitors? Is this a common experience--extortion by the police against tourists on the road? Are there better alternatives other than renting a...
