Fishing for opinions - best hard drive setup for compiling/writes
(20 Apr 2009)
Greetings,
What is everyone's opinion on the best setup for a PC where the main target will be a programmer doing compiling of code?
I believe the main bottleneck for performance are hard drive speeds (correct me if I'm wrong) and since we are running standard 7200 RPM drives I am investigating better alternatives.
So far I have tried a RAID 0 configuration with 2 150GB VelociRaptors on a DX48BT2 Intel Extreme motherboard using the onboard Intel Matrix RAID controller (ICH9R I believe). Obviousl...

Compiling car values for VRT?
(12 Jun 2009)
Is it worth trying to compile lists of cars and their current market values to send to the VRO? I'm just kind of tired looking at recent Quote: s like €8118 for a 06 Golf GTI with an OMSP of 25,371 when they're for sale in Ireland with less than half the mileage for €17,450 and that's with a dealer! Another is the RX-8 - well over valued! And seeing a 03 Irish reg Elise for sale on done deal for 16k, you can bet the VRO would tell you it's worth about 25 if you brought in a 03 yourself.
It's all...

Thinking about codecs
(20 Apr 2009)
A couple of months ago I started using Fedora after testing the majority of the most popular distros. I'm very happy with it and respect that it avoids bundling proprietary code. Still I find myself in need of things like the bad and ugly gstreamer codecs, and a dvd enabled xine build. I have been compiling these as needed but I wonder how most Fedora users approach this. I know many use livna.org, and I've seen the RPMs available on rpmfind.net but I really don't know much about these repos. I...

originally I started writing all this to the mono people, but it is OT and I
doubt they would care...
so, here is the status:
I have partial/incomplete frontend support for both Java and C#, as well as
good old C.
I am actually using the same parser for all 3 languages (and C++ as well,
but this is a lower priority), where an internal "lang" variable is used to
remember which language is being processed at the time (and a...

I'm thinking about swapping the '00 M coupe for an '04 ZHP sedan and want to see what all of you have done with your cars. Interior, exterior, engine, suspension, etc. Not that I'll be compiling ideas or anything
Lets see those beautiful ZHP's!

Dual 4850s or GTX260s
(26 Jun 2009)
Been thinking about this for a while...
Core i7 920 w/ 2 4850s
or
E8400 w/ 2 4870s OR GTX 260s
Which would put out better performance on the newest games?
It seems like Core i7 is really kicking ass in CURRENT games, plus I'm majoring in computer science so a stronger CPU might be helpful for compiling huge projects and the like.

Has anyone tried it out yet? What do you think?
I'm thinking about compiling it, but I'm not sure if it will be worth the effort. Du kühlst den brennenden Durst meines Busens, lieblicher Morgenwind
