GNOME 3.0 - shell and applets
(15 May 2009)
Hello gentlemen, hamster applet[0] speaking!
Could not decide to which mail i should reply in the applet part[1] of
GNOME 3 thread, so i thought will give a shot to a new thread.
I have an initial proposal to revise applets and try to figure out
what is actually going on. After that, i believe we will be able to
draw more specific conclusions.
As maintainer of hamster applet, i am not really too worried about
whatever amount of code it will take to get it in the revamped UI, or
in which shape we...

My multi-functional N810
2 Attachment(s) I love this device...I use it more than my laptop some days...
Here is what I have found useful so far.... (see screenshot):
- Personal Menu: for one-screen access to most used applications/games grouped in sections I can name myself
- Personal Launcher: Love this application. It allows me to put small icons of my most used apps on my homescreen!
(As you may see, my most used apps are:
Tear, Skype, Mauku, Pidgin, QuickNote, gPodder and mCalendar).

[xubuntu] What applications are connecting to the network?
(13 Jun 2009)
I would like to know what application(s) is/are using my network interface (desktop PC, eth0).
I installed the XFCE Network Monitor applet yesterday, and it displays constant network activity, even when I shut down all obvious network applications. I never saw that behaviour on previous installations (on the same and different computers).
So I would like to know how to discover what applications are accessing the network. I have been reading about network monitoring/analyzing tools, but I got co...

running x-window applications in java
(13 May 2009)
Well, I've been busier than an ant at a picnic today, what with getting java installed and running applets and servlets under Apache-Tomcat.
All right, so now that I have this stuff working, there has got to be a simple way to do what I want to do -- I think. I want to run some x-window applications under java. The purpose of this is to allow web users to access programs that I use to analyze data. For example, suppose I want the user to have a look at a 3-dimensional (well, 2-D rendering of a 3...

Softkey Customizer For All Tabs
Hey guys & gals.... I was setting here today working on some small mods for manila, and started thinking about something that could have some real potential.
What I was thinking, was to have a program, similar to the SoftKey Changer Applet, or the Softkey change feature in any of the available programs such as Diamond Tweak, etc. However, instead of simply changing the softkeys on the home tab, it would allow you to be able to change the softkey on all tabs.
For...

flash
(18 Apr 2009)
hey all,
ive been looking into some interactiveness on a site (tutorial for interlopers ), and im thinking about using flash for it (as opposed to a java applet). Only problem is, that i have absolutely no experience with flash...
I need to be able to do the following:
1) draw an image
2) a command window like output
3) draw lines
4) calculate whether a line intersects another line.
5) recolor simple graphics
6) capture and use mouse motions+clicks
They are all basic functions imho, and, as far...

is
moot --> they switched to implementing as a Gnome applet.
the
server side code, as a step back in opening Solaris. Half open/half
closed. Life goes on, though.

I missed the fundamental shift the project team made by switching from
jar->gnome applet. It was approved that way.

Living with the limits of Windows 7 Starter Edition
(22 Apr 2009)
If youve read anything about Windows 7 Starter Edition, your first reaction was probably the same as mine: Is Microsoft nuts? This ultra-cheap edition is intended for use on netbooks, but its biggest restriction sounds like a complete deal-breaker: it only runs three applications at once.
But I prefer to form my opinions based on facts, not press releases. So, for the sake of research, Ive spent the last three weeks running Windows 7 Starter Edition on an ultra-portable Sony notebook. Heres w...
