SBS2003 to Standard Windows Server 2008 - license?
(25 Jun 2009)
On Thu, 25 Jun 2009 18:24:48 -0400, "Cary Shultz" <cshultz@outsourceit.com
Good afternoon!
We have a client who is making use of SBS2003 on a five year old box (some
30 users....so rebuild is not really an option). We are looking to put in a
new server (me likely the new Dell R410....not an advertisement...just
sharing). We are thinking about virtualinzg that one physical box to two
virtual servers running Windows Server 2008 64-bit (one will be a Domain
Controller and one will be...

SBS2008 Testing with a SBS2003 Production Network
(23 Jun 2009)

I am thinking about setting up a SBS2008 server on the same subnet as the
current SBS2003 production server. Of course the SBS2008 will have its own
new forest and domain, and I will start with a new SBS2008 installation when
it comes time to do the SBS2003 to SBS2008 migration. This will allow me to
have several test workstations within easy reach, test the new firewall
setup, etc.
Any precautions I should be aware...

If you are going to do SBS server, you kind of have to forget the rules about standard servers
The SBS package has been specifically written to insure that the kinds of issues normally encountered in the standard versions are not issues with SBS

Server is full, need your suggestions to expand server storage.
(01 Jun 2009)

One client's Dell PE 2900 server is full, the data partition (4x146GB,
RAID5) is almost 0MB available.
Here is 2 solutions I can think of
- There are 2 more hot-swappable hdd slots available. So i can throw
in 2x146GB to expand RAID5
- Install a 1TB NAS (Network Attached Storage) box
Which way is better?
Do you backup the data stored on NAS?
Regardless which way I go, I have to think about how to back up such
big amount o...

OT: Heads up on Trend WFBS6.0A install
(31 May 2009)
On Sun, 31 May 2009 10:26:01 -0700, "Gary Karasik" <gkarasik@fea.net
Hi,
For those of you thinking about upgrading to recently released WFBS 6.0
advanced, note this from "Known Issues" in the readme:
7.9.3. During [Messaging Security Agent] installation, the installer may be
unable to submit passwords that have special, non-alphanumeric characters to
the Exchange Server computer. As a result, you may be unable to install the
MSA if the domain administrator account you are using has a...

Re: How to solve the 75 users/device sbs2008 restrictions
(30 May 2009)

Further to Russ's correct answer....
SBS tops out at a combination of 75 users *and/or* devices. It is confusing
when you first start to think about it, but the explanation is:
Users can connect from any device and need their own license. Desktop,
Laptop, RWW, Mobile Phone, it makes no difference, if you have a user
license you are good to go.
Devices are fixed pieces of metal that can h...

Advice on SBS upgrade
(21 May 2009)
On Thu, 21 May 2009 07:03:00 -0700, Mike <Mike@discussions.microsoft.com
Hi,
I work for a small non-profit (35 employees), and we are running SBS 2003,
using Exchange and SQL.
Even in this economy, we are growing as an agency, and will possibly add 5
employees this year.
I'm looking at purchasing new server HW (current HW is 5 years old), and am
trying to decide if we should move to SBS 2008 or regular server when we
update. I know I'm not providing a lot of info here, but is there...

SBS2003 very slow OS starting
(19 Apr 2009)

Hello everyone,
after a rainstorm I turned on the server but it did not start because of SAM
error. After the recovery process, the starting up lasted for almost 2 hours
and half. Now the system looks work (clients can connect to it and programs
that use resources on it function well) but if I try to reboot the server the
process (turning off and turning on) continues to last for nearly 3 hours.
What is happen in...
