1. the language of feminism   (08 Jun 2009)
im doing a research assignment where i am looking into the language of feminism, how it has changed over time and how the language of modern day feminism has influenced people's opinions on the topic itself. also wondering how you think the way society views you is different from how you view yourself any help and ideas would be greatly appreciated

2. Islamist Feminism vs. Secular Feminism   (08 Jun 2009)
I realize this may belong in the gender studies subforum, but it seems like it encompasses more than just that. I wrote this on a message board for an online class I am taking and I am craving some serious debate on it, and I don't really think my class is going to give that to me, so I am posting it here! "I wrote my paper on a rising type of feminism in Islam that is called "Islamist feminism" (to differentiate it from "Islamic" which is Islam politicized). I mostly focused on Iran, because it...

3. Feminism in 2009   (04 May 2009)
Two articles in today's WaPo address the changes in the last decades in the role of women in our society. The first article is a book review of a biography of Helen Gurley Brown (former editor of Cosmopolitan and author of "Sex and the Single Girl"): Quote: : Who Won Feminism? by Naomi Wolf Look at Michelle Obama: She has segued seamlessly from an active professional life as a highly paid hospital executive to her current incarnation as fashion plate, doting mom and demure sex object, posing for...

4. The Feminization of Society   (07 Jun 2009)
This is just to kick off the discussion of the topic raised in the thread on Obama's religion. Please don't let's reprise the fruitless arguments about Obama's religion. This thread is to discuss the notion, whether documented or merely felt, that society is becoming overly feminized. Man's Field A review of Manliness , by Harvey C. Mansfield By Diana Schaub Posted May 7, 2006 This article appeared in the Spring 2006 issue of the Claremont Review of Books. In a footnote, Harvey Mansfield admits...

5. Why Women and Power Don't Mix by J.P. McDermott   (20 May 2009)
Why Women and Power Don't Mix by J.P. McDermott An anonymous review This book opens with a bombshell: "Prior to this generation, in every society ever known, the power of women has been strictly limited, which is why societies have prospered. If or when a society failed to do this adequately, it simply ceased to exist." The author then proceeds to thoroughly support this contention. Though by now debunking claims that sex differences are "socially constructed" and of ancient matriarchal civiliza...

6. Feminism vs. chivalry   (21 May 2009)
Here's a blog by Samantha Brett - sex and dating blogger for the SMH... Quote: : Lately, (or has it always been this way?) feminists have been getting a bad rap. "Young feminists just want to go wild and pole dance !" claimed one journalist. "Older feminists are humourless bores!" many whine. " Blame feminists, not Rhianna !" some said when the Rhianna-Chris Brown saga came to light. Then there are those who blame feminism for all types of issues being faced on Planet Dating. "Blame feminists fo...

7. Big Antique Ring-tacky for a lefty professional?   (05 May 2009)
To me feminism is about having choices, whatever they happen to be. I'm 41 and going to be married this year, finally having found a wonderful really smart man. The wedding is going to be big but as simple as possible, going through as little of the Wedding Industrial Complex as possible. So we've been looking at rings, both agreeing that conflict-free (if such a thing can actually be proven-I've researched and remain unconvinced) or estate rings are the best choices. I LOVE ART DECO RINGS! Let...

8. Thinking about some strains   (23 Apr 2009)
Im thinking about growing some lemon skunk, big bang and cheese strains outdoors this summer, all feminized from greenhouse seeds. Firstly, can i trust this company and can i trust that they will be feminized. Secondly, can i trust that these strains will do well outdoors. Last year, i had bagseed from mids, which created huge buds but i lost quite a bit to bud rot . I am hoping to avoid that this year.

9. Is it possible to be a male feminist?   (16 Apr 2009)
Ok. I'm a guy and I consider myself a feminist. But I know some women who think I'm ridiculous for feeling this way. They think only women can be feminists. To me, being a feminist means valuing women and men equally and trying to stop the rampant andocentrism in my society. And I see many women whom I would not consider feminists because they propagate a male-centered ethic (like a woman I know who insists that all her daughter need think about is winning a rich husband and pleasing him). I als...

10. Maybe sex up the discussion with Lipstick Lesbians in power suits pole dancing...   (05 Jun 2009)
The Constitution and Supreme Court protect women's rights to reproductive/health privacy or they don't. If they don't, the law and the courts need to be corrected so that they do. There have been many threads since Dr. Tiller's assassination, that tell personal stories, that clarify the process of abortion and the rare and necessary-in-extreme circumstances realities of late-term abortion. The Anti Choicers have exploited medical procedures to propagandize against women's rights. They caused the...
