1. Thinking about going Raid 0, not sure   (02 May 2009)
Currently have a 150GB Raptor, looking for more speed, but don't feel like spending very much. Was looking at some inexpensive 80GB 7200rpm drives ($33.99 each on newegg) and was thinking about getting 4 to 6 of them and putting them in raid 0. That could potentially give me somewhere between 350MB/s to 500MB/s. Could I actually expect this performance? Any catches I need to know about? Keep in mind I do realize that with raid 0 the more drives you have, the higher your chance of irreparable dat...

2. Cheap PCI SATA RAID vs onboard SATA2, opinions?   (10 Apr 2009)
Basically I just got a cheap PCI SATA card which is a VIA VT6421A so I can have an external sata port, but I noticed its RAID as well, whereas my motherboard is just non-raid sata 2, and I wondered if running RAID 0 on the card would be faster than 2 normal drives on the mobo connectors. I already have 2 identical Seagate 250GB drives I bought thinking my board was RAID. Currently just have one boot and one storage. Since the card runs on the PCI bus so is 133MB/S max, will I see any real benefi...

3. To do or not to do 6-raptor raid 0?   (29 May 2009)
So i got 6 150gb WD Raptors, WD1500ADFD, the old kind. I've been thinking about doing a Raid 0 with all six? I already have two in Raid 0 for god knows how long, and I absolutely love it. What do you guys think?

4. Raid 0/1 setup. Opinions plz!   (03 Jul 2009)
Hey all, My new build will be done next week (awaiting q9550 arrival)- I've never had any experience with RAID setups so I'm new to how it all works. Anyway, I plan on using the P5Q's onboard controller and here is my theoretical setup: - 2 identical WD 640gb raptors with dual partitions PARTITION #1 will be RAID 0 - the "**** you can lose" setup, mainly for the OS, and apps. PARTITION #2 will be RAID 1 - utilizing raid 1 for storage use only. Will this work? Opinions/suggestions?

5. RAID 0 w/2 30gb OCZ Vertex   (02 Jul 2009)
So I think I might have a problem, probably not, but want opinions.... I was wanting to go to RAID 0 with my new build. I was planning on using two 30gb OCZ Vertex in RAID 0 for OS only (Windows 7RC). The "problem" is that with just programs and OS, I'm already at 42gb. I've read that SSD's "slow" down the more they fill up. Is there an issue of using 45 out of 60gb in RAID 0? Will the almost full capacity create "slow" problems?

6. RAID 1 or RAID 5   (28 May 2009)
I've never built a computer with RAID and decided I would do it this time around since my business requires backups of files (photographer) and I didn't want to lose anything soo.. I setup my build like this: 1x RAID 1 with two 250gb drives for my OS 1x RAID 1 with two 1tb drives for storage I thought I was a genius when I got it all up and running but now that I think about it.. why the hell do I need RAID 1 for my OS cause all I have on there is program files, no storage what so ever. I have a...

7. use of laptop hard drives in raid 5 array for WHS system drive. opinions ...   (02 Jul 2009)
one thing i don't like about WHS is the lack of failure protection for the system drive. if the system drive dies the WHS is toast. i have an adaptec 3805 hardware raid card ( 8 x internal SAS/SATA ), and am considering putting the OS on a raid 5 array. doesn't need to be be particularly big in capacity, but small in physical volume occupied by the drives and low power consumption. to this end i am considering a supermicro 8 2.5inch drives into 2 5.25inch bay module, and a set of seagate 7200.3...

8. Caviar Blacks in RAID 0 or Velociraptors in RAID 0?   (24 May 2009)
So for my new build I have two 640gb Caviar Blacks and will be setting them up in RAID 0. That leaves me without a storage drive for my Blu-rays, music, and other stuff. So I've been thinking about picking up a 1tb drive or two. But on the other hand, I've also been thinking about buying two VRs and putting them in RAID 0 and use my existing 640gb drives as my storage. Now obviously the latter will cost considerably more, but is the performance increase worth it in your mind? As a simple example...

10. A RAID zero question/comment   (03 May 2009)
I realise that this isn't Mac Pro specific, but a lot of Mac Pro users also use RAID. The general comment I've seen on these forums is that with RAID 0 either disk going down takes the lot (I'm talking two disk for simplicity, of course it can be extrapolated) so you're drives are twice as likely to fail. Thinking about it, isn't it worse than that? My thoughts go along these lines; with every file striped across two disks every read and write operation will involve both disks (even though it wi...
