1. Aged 36: Should I be thinking about a pension?   (10 Apr 2009)
Hi I am 36 and have quite a chequered work/ pension history - three years full-time paying into the NHS pension scheme - three years full-time paying NI - three years part-time paying into the Cambridge Uni scheme - two years working part-time in a shop just paying NI - two to three years on Incapacity Benefit (?NI paid I think) - less than six months on Jobseekers Allowance - less than six months working part-time - one year full-time paying NI - two years as a full-time student, working part-t...

2. What is your pension system like?   (05 May 2009)
After reading the thread on "How much do you make" I got to thinking about what was said (which some very good comments were made) and did not want to hi jack that thread with this question. How much is your pension at retirement? What % of you salary can you draw after how many years? There are many different pension systems out there from State run systems to systems that are run directly by the department itself. We have a department run pension system and we draw 81% of our highest 3 years s...

3. 25% tax free pension cash. What did you do with it?   (23 Apr 2009)
I look after my dh`s sipp which contains his lifelong pension transferred from his work. I can vest it anytime I want and he is 62 this week. In the meantime we are doing fine, living on my pension and savings I want to think about options for the cash element of 25%. Yes we could be sensible and invest £20,000 year on year into the maxi isas but in reality it is bloomin time for us to be spending, after 40 years of living carefully. We want to enjoy the cash and not just hand it onto our childr...

4. Anyone Else Worried About Their Pension?   (03 Jul 2009)
I'm 30 & got a pension statement in recently. In the projected income, it says that I can expect to get 10k a year at retirement (if the fund does well) & 3k a year if the fund doesn't do so well. There is a note about inflation to the effect that in 25yrs time, the purchasing power of the money will be half. Reading this letter was one of the most soberig moments of my life. I'm obviously s**ting myself and will be cranking up my % contribution asap. I mean...WTF is 5k a year gonna do for me......

5. Millions Still See 'property As Their Pension'   (02 Jul 2009)
Millions still see 'property as their pension' Quote: Despite a beleaguered housing market and an ongoing recession, millions of Britons are still putting their retirement in jeopardy by depending solely on property to fund their retirement income, according to new research. The fact that property prices are 16% down on last year (Halifax), has not dimmed the British population's faith in bricks and mortar, with some 16%, or an estimated 5m people, still relying on their home to fund their retir...

6. voluntary redundancy and ill health pension?   (08 Apr 2009)
My husband's health has been poor for a few years now but he has struggled on at work. Now his company have offered voluntary redundancy and he is thinking about taking it. He also has quite a good pension available, with ill health options. If he finishes work on the grounds of his ill health and claims his ill health pension, can he also accept the voluntary redundancy from work? He's 58 and has worked there 38 years. I can't find anything in the pension fund rule book to say you can't claim t...

8. Any UAW Retirees Out There? (55, pensions, moving, social security) - Ret...   (08 Jun 2009)
I was thinking about how the bailout, or not, would affect UAW retirees. I remember the United Steel Workers getting screwed many year ago and it looks like the UAW retiree is next.

9. Pension Future?   (15 Apr 2009)
After reading this article http://www.antonkreil.com/greed-part...%99ve-created/ I began to think about the people who have suffered greatly in this recent crisis, one particular group are those approaching retirement, in the UK (at least) pension plans have crashed - unfortunately leaving many with very little. In an attempt to learn from lessons of the past, I wonder how feesable you see trading as a way of amassing a pension or what other alternatives you could see a more "secure" way of ensu...

10. Is a pension worth while.?   (26 May 2009)
Considering what has happened recently .One has to ask is a pension worth while.? I have most of my life considered a pension as being a bit of a scam ,and events may have proved my belief to be correct.? I have always put any spare cash into tangible assets that could be changed into cash if and when needed. No expert on this subject just a feeling I have had since I was very young that gambling with ones nest egg was not a good idea allied to the fact that pension companies seemed to make an a...
