Firefighting and Family Life
(14 Apr 2009)
I have been speaking with my gf of 3 years that I am heavily thinking about becoming a Firefighter. She keeps telling me how stressful it will be on our marriage. She tells me, she wants me to come home every night in one peace. To have dinner, sleep together..etc etc. I am a sophomore in College and she is in Graduate school, and she says she would be worried every time I'd leave the house. I don't know what to say...she has a valid point. She says however, if I really want it, she will support...

Would you be interested in a firefighting game?
(27 Apr 2009)
Lately I've been playing the SNES game "The Firemen" and thought how much I would love to see a firefighting game for this generation of systems. YouTube - SNES The Firemen
I thought it would be great to play in the point of view of a Fireman/woman who has to work together with their team to take down fires, I believe a game like this could really take the aspect of teamwork to a new level in a videogame. I also believe firefighters deserve a game in tribute to the hard work and dedication they...

Thinking about enlisting in the Coast Guard
(06 Jun 2009)
Are there any of you here on GDC that are in the Coast Guard. Just wondering what you think of it. I put in a call today to set up an appointment with a recruiter but I want honest opinions.
I cant really do any other service because I cant get shipped overseas because of my dog. I want to do firefighting or airplane/ helicopter mechanics. Are they hard fields to get into in the coast guard?
Any info would help.

Quote: : NEW HAVEN Frank Ricci has been a firefighter here for 11 years, and he would do just about anything to advance to lieutenant.
The last time the city offered a promotional exam, he said in a sworn statement, he gave up a second job and studied up to 13 hours a day. Mr. Ricci, who is dyslexic, paid an acquaintance more than $1,000 to read textbooks onto audiotapes. He made flashcards, took practice tests, worked with a study group an...

Firefighters Sitting Outside
(03 Jun 2009)
I am wondering what everyone's opinion on firefighters sitting outside on a bench in front of the station is. Do you feel that the public enjoys seeing the firefighters out and available at the station, or do you think that the perception is that the firefighters are just "doing nothing" when they are sitting outside? I am wondering because we are having this discussion at our station today and I am interested in what some other views are.

Supreme Court rules in favor of White New Haven Firefighters
(29 Jun 2009)
The Supreme Court has ruled that white firefighters were denied promotion based on race. Basically the city of New Haven threw out a promotion exam because only 2 hispanics and no blacks scored high enough to make lieutenant or Captain. The white firefighters sued claiming they were denied promotion because of their race.
Some interesting tidbits:
1. Judge Sonia Sotomayor who is nominated to join the Supreme Court had ruled against the whiteboys as an appeals judge, the Supreme Court has reverse...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court has ruled that white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., were unfairly denied promotions because of their race, reversing a decision that high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor endorsed as an appeals court judge.

SCOTUS rules 5-4 for white firefighters
(30 Jun 2009)
SCOTUS has ruled 5-4 that New Haven discriminated against white firefighters who were denied promotion after the city discarded the results of a written test. No minority applicants scored high enough on the test to be considered for promotion.
Sotomayor voted to uphold the district court's opinion in favor of the city when she was on the 2nd (?) Circuit Court of Appeals.
Correction - One Latino qualified for promotion based on the test.
