I will have another 640 AALS that will boot windows XP. would i Be better having all four drives in raid 5, and dual booting both the 32 bit and 64 bit OS's on the same raid 5 hdd's just a diff partition? if this is even possible. sorry if these questions are dumb. im building a...

Build Log: 3gb vs 6gb, triple booting?
(30 May 2009)
I'm finally upgrading my AMD Athlon 2700+ computer. This next one will likely last me for a while too, so I'm starting off with a good base. I am able to get a good deal on the i7 920 CPU and Intel DX58SO motherboard, so that's what I will be using. However I want to keep it a relatively "budget" build. One of the thinks that I was thinking about is 3gb vs 6gb of RAM. I'm leaning towards 6gb, as that seems better in the long term. However that means I will have to go with the 64 bit version of V...

Self-Booting 900MB Releases! Good or bad?
(20 May 2009)
I've come into the possession of a nearly complete collection of PAL TOSEC GDI images. In fact the only games that are missing are:
Evolution 2: Far off Promise
Giant Killers
Grinch, The
MoHo
Sega Swirl
Sonic Shuffle
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
I've been thinking about buying 900MB CD-Rs and releasing the larger sized games onto them using no or minimal downsampling, this would eliminate poorly downsampled games and glitchy audio occurences. I just wondered if this would be a welcomed idea or a bad...

Presario C500 c551nr - Replacing wireless Hey everyone, wondering if any ...
(26 May 2009)
Hey everyone, wondering if any of you have tried the following:
I'm thinking about picking up a usb wireless n adapter; which means I won't be needing the internal wireless nic. Since that's a mini PCIe slot, I was wondering if anyone has tried replacing that with one of the many SSDs floating around the web...
2 main questions I have about those:
If they're mini-pciE, why are there sata versions and pata versions out there? There's no sata or pata connector on these cards it seems, the pci-e co...

Windows XP Not Booting
(26 Apr 2009)
On Sun, 26 Apr 2009 09:06:01 -0700, Richard J <RichardJ@discussions.microsoft.com
Hi group,
I've stumbled into a very frustrating situation and was hoping for some
pointers or ideas, short of re-installation or purchase of a new machine.
I have a Dell XPS, purchased about 6 years ago and it is running Windows XP
(obviously). Somewhere in the past few days, the computer stopped booting
up. I would get to the Windows XP logo screen with the progress bar running
back and forth ... th...

Virtual Machine vs Dual-Boot
(19 Jun 2009)
I've been having trouble dual-booting Linux and then I saw something online and I've been wondering if it'll be easier to use in a VM.
In your opinions, which would be better -- virtual machine or dual-boot?
Also, what's a good (free) virtual machine program?

As the title says, my friends computer gets stuck in a boot loop. The load bar on the XP splash screen doesnt even make one pass.

Opinions on USB CD/DVD Drive "Emulator" device
(28 Apr 2009)
Hi tom's hardware forum peoples! I'm an electrical engineer working on a design I'd like to bring to market. Before I actually prototype the device, though, I'd like to see how much interest there is in such a thing, or if anyone has suggestions for changes / add-ons. Thanks very much for any feedback!!
The device I'm working on is a small USB stick which would have a microSD card slot and be used to "emulate" CD/DVD/Floppy drives. The idea is you keep a bunch of ISOs or IMGs on the microSD card...

Should I dual boot Ubuntu with Windows Vista?
(01 Jul 2009)
Just got a Toshiba L505 laptop (AMAZING laptop) and was thinking about dual booting Ubuntu with Vista (which will soon to be Windows 7). Boot time really isn't an issue on laptops, so I'm not sure. It came with Vista Home Premium, which I love to pieces. Vista does everything I need, so I don't know if I should put Ubuntu on. I also haven't experienced ANY problems with Vista, it's very nice to me. I used Ubuntu in the past occasionally about a year ago, but mainly used Windows XP due to my love...
