1. House Bill HR 45...What do you think about it?   (02 May 2009)
Here is the first of probably many attempts to infringe on our 2nd Amendments rights...House Bill HR 45. http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.45: Particularly worrisome is... SEC. 101. LICENSING REQUIREMENT SEC. 102. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS SEC. 401. CRIMINAL PENALTIES SEC. 403. INSPECTIONS. SEC. 405. INJUNCTIVE ENFORCEMENT. What this bill would actually do is give the Attorney General (Eric Holder) the power to tell U.S. Citizens whether they have the right to own a gun but also what...

2. Query madness.   (20 Apr 2009)
Okay, I don't know if this belongs here, and if it doesn't, my sincerest apologies. I haven't been sending out queries for a very long time, but I'm starting to get frustrated with the whole query-writing system. I can never find good examples of fantasy queries to see how they're set up, and every time I re-write a new query, there's always something wrong with it. Every free moment in my head I'm constructing a new query, and with every new query, I find little problems and it's driving me cra...

3. Driving tests... did you pass first time? And a query...   (25 Jun 2009)
Re: Driving tests... did you pass first time? And a query...   In my opinion yes insuring your car when you haven't passes is expensive. I chose to not do that and just wait to insure it until I passed. I had one 1 1/2 hour lesson every week and I passed both my theory and practical first time with no worry. When I did have a go in my dads car I found it confused me more and made me more nervous. My dad would get mad at me not doing things correctly and if I was to do something wrong he wouldn't...

4. RESTful service operations for querying data   (12 May 2009)
When defining a resource orientated RESTful service do you think it's a good idea to define an explicit operation (verb) for querying data? It seems obvious and easy to map CRUD operations on a resource orientated RESTful service using HTTP to operations such as PUT, GET, POST & DELETE but how should operations that query for multiple resources be mapped - using a new operation called 'QUERY' or still use 'GET' that returns a collection of resources. I'm interested in people opinions and experie...

5. Outsourcing the querying process....   (26 Jun 2009)
What do you all think about this? Instead of researching the markets and banging out query letters in mass format, what if instead you outsourced that area to others, made it their job to find you writing assignments? Has anybody ever done this? If you have, care to elaborate on how you go about doing it? Is it a feasible idea? Why or why not?

6. Which agents quickly respond to e-mail queries?   (07 Jul 2009)
I assume this is the right forum to ask this question- if not, I'll move it somewhere else. I need to start sending query letters to agents- even if they reject me, I have to start the process somewhere. Since a bunch of you guys have sent dozens of query letters to agents, you must know which ones are quick to answer them. Even if they respond by rejecting me, it's better to know relatively quickly than to draw it out. In your opinion, which legitimate, reputable agencies and agents would be mo...

7. Opinions please, policey type query   (09 Jun 2009)
The following is totally hypothetical scenario If a person was arrested on suspicion of nicking a car on the basis that they were found in the vicinty of a recently abandoned stovec & after being taken to the police station refusing to take part in a breathalyser procedure (requested due to them smelling of booze & having been suspected of driving the stolen car) Do you think it is right that htey should be prosecuted for refusing to provide a specimin of breath even after the original offence o...

8. How to make multiple database queries more efficient in Perl   (13 May 2009)
Hi all, I have a queries that reside in multiple methods each (query) of which can contain multiple paramaters. I am trying to reduce file size and linecount to make it more maintainable. Below is such an occurence: $sql_update = qq { UPDATE database.table SET column = 'UPDATE!' WHERE id = ? }; $sth_update = $dbh->prepare($sql_update); if ($dbh->err) { my $error = "Could not prepare statement. Error: ". $dbh->errstr ." Exiting at line " . __LINE__; print "$error\n"; die; } $sth_rnupdate...

9. Nikon 18-200 vr purchase query:   (26 Jun 2009)
I have a Nikon D90, kit and Nikon 105mm lenses. I am in a position to buy a new lens and was thinking about the Nikon 18-200MM VR. My photography needs are general purpose; mainly landscape and macro. I have also considered the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED and Nikon 55-200MM F4.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX. They are £429 and £171 at amazon respectively. The Nikon 18-200MM F3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX can be bought for £525 elsewhere. Cost is not an issue up to about £550. I have read Thom Hogan's re...
