Minimalist HTPC - opinions please (surprise, surprise)
(01 Oct 2008)
Hi,
I've been lurking here for quite a while, and have finally decided to build an HTPC for bluray disk and DVD rip playback.
I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible, and built with as few components as possible ('cos this is my first attempt at a build). So here's what I had in mind:
Antec Veris Fusion Remote
Corsair VX - 550W
Asus M3N78-EMH HDMI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4850e
Corsair XMS2 DDR2 PC2-6400 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 - 2 GB Kit
LG GGC-H20L
Samsung SpinPoint F1 DT SATA II - 750 GB...

Dream Home Entertainment Center?
(21 Sep 2008)
Dream Home Entertainment Center? So, I want to build my dream entertainment center. I started out with a Windows Home Server based system, and eventually buy SageTV Products. Currently, I have DirecTV HD, WMV DVD ripps, MP3 and MP4 music files, and numerous photos. After thinking about it I decided to go to a Vista with the same functions but with more home PC functions(dvd ripping, various programms)(Though I have not swapped systems yet). Basically, I want to have a set up with PVR, internet s...

My First Build: For Online Gaming & Producing Music
(13 Oct 2008)
Hello world!
Before I get into the list of computer guts I've researched so far I thought I'd introduce the idea of what I'm looking for. I'll split this post up into 3 different sections for quick reference.
1. What I've done so far.
My budget is flexible though I'm consider maxing out at around $1,500 or $1,600 if it is possible (for the goodies that I'm looking for). The current components/parts that I've been looking at have totals ranging from $1,300 to $1,600 before taxes (mostly from newe...

The Freeware Help Thread
Hello world!
In this thread I aim to compile a comprehensive list of freeware (which should help you out if you see how much leading software licenses cost!) and to also give somewhere for people to talk about and discuss it. So if you use any freeware and have an uncontrollable urge to tell the world about it, this is the place for you!
Here is the list, organised into categories.

[autoMKV] Quality DVD ripping.
(22 Sep 2008)
I know everybody has their own opinion as to what "best" encoding settings to use, but I'm fairly noobish as to what avs filters and techniques do what, and how to get the best quality DVD rip without sacrificing excessive disk space.
So I pose this question. I want to rip DVD's to wmv 5.1 surround, to getting the best quality possible without going overboard on disk space. Overboard, in my opinion, is pushing 2.5 gig for a 2 hour movie. Biggest thing I'm trying to avoid is blocky video chuncks...
