The Peltzman Effect
(30 Nov 2008)
I just saw something on CSI that made me think of riding. They were talking about an auto accident, and one of the investigators said that there's a theory that as safety regulations are enacted, people respond by increasing risky behavior. So basically, when forced to wear a seat belt, people tend to drive a little more aggressively. Here's a Quote: from the Wikipedia page.

Is fiction inherently capitalist?
(26 Nov 2008)
I just read a lengthy review in the Times Literary Supplement of a book that, according to the review, advances the quirky notion that fiction--all fiction--somehow is a paean to the free marketplace. The book is called Fiction Sets You Free, by Russell Berman. I haven't read the book. For one thing, it costs $42.50, and I doubt it will show up many places besides university libraries.

This came up in a thread about materialism and the problem of consciousness. I didn't want to deviate from the topic, but it did stimulate my thinking about what makes for good philosophy. So I'm going to start a new thread focused on this question.
I don't believe in an ultimat...

Reminder - use every card every 3-6 months
(22 Nov 2008)
My brother works in risk management with a major issuer, and passed this advice along to me. I will now share it with you.
His bank, and presumably many others, are going to become increasingly aggressive about culling old accounts, or CLDing them to tiny limits.
In the past, old accounts would lay dormant for years, not generating any revenue, and only very rarely causing trouble. The number of these accounts that woke up to become sources of revenue vastly outnumbered the number of them that w...
