Low end Ubuntu laptop - opinions?
(12 Nov 2008)
I really want a linux machine just to familiarize myself with it. I would run it as my main, but hey you know gaming.
So I have a chance to pick up an old machine for the price of an inverter & optical drive
Its a Toshiba Satellite A100-SK4
Intel Core Solo - 1.83ghz
1GB DDR2 533
80GB HDD 4200RPM
Intel 945 or 950 *cant remember
15.4"
I just want a simple laptop for internet browsing/email/chatting, occasional data transfer/backup.
Would the newest Ubuntu 32bit run ok on this system?
Thank you in...

Tuner Upgrade advice
(06 Nov 2008)
My old system has two PVR-150s running under XP MCE. I'm thinking about upgrading all my hardware based around a Core Duo 1.83ghz (T2400) processor that I have gathering dust.
The quality on these tuners aren't that great, and I think they're really old. So what are more recent good quality tuners? I have cable tv, but no HD at this point and I don't think I'll be getting. I don't even have an HDTV right now but that's coming in the next month or two, probably before I complete the HTPC build.

is a 1.83ghz core duo hugely sluggish as compared to the more recent core 2 duo for everyday tasks?

Fan speed / temperature: First gen Macbook -vs- Current gen Macbook (white...
(13 Oct 2008)
Hi,
I'm thinking of upgrading my first generation (dualcore 1.83Ghz) macbook to the current macbook or the possibly upcoming new revision. (If this new revision does not have enough advantages over the current revision in my opinion, I might prefer a current macbook for a lowered price after the new revision comes out)
Current situation:
The fan speed (and temperature as they relate) of my first-generation macbook running tiger is somewhat disturbing me. I use the macbook in clamshell mode (clos...
