Is your prawn cocktail toxic? Read this and you may never want to eat one again
Southern Vietnam is hot and sticky at any time, but the humid air inside the Huong family's hut, perched on a prawn-pond dyke in the Mekong Delta, is almost unbearable.
The single room is rank with chemicals: we cough and sneeze when we enter.
There's an acrid dust all over the mud floor, which makes you worry for little Huong Thi Mai, a seven-year-old girl who is sitting on the bed near the door watching her parents...

Celente Predicts Revolution, Food Riots, Tax Rebellions By 2012
Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet.com
November 13, 2008
The man who predicted the 1987 stock market crash and the fall of the
Soviet Union is now forecasting revolution in America, food riots and
tax rebellions - all within four years, while cautioning that putting
food on the table will be a more pressing concern than buying Christmas
gifts by 2012.

Just back from France - 2 weeks hols with EuroCamp - and although didn't go
anywhere naturist and unable to have a beach day due to weather, I did find
something refreshing in the way the French lifestyle.
Firstly the back in time with shop opening times? although a little
frustrating at first you got used to making sure you'd got petrol and enough
food until they opened again.
Then public toilets & sh...

Good article : stamps as representations of British Empire
(14 Oct 2008)
Came across this interesting article today which I thought may be on interest. Summarised below:
Cheers
Margoz
Jeffrey, Keith (2006) Crown, communication and the colonial post: Stamps, the monarchy and the British empire , The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History, 34(1) pp 45 - 70
This article investigates some of the possibilities for imperial history of using philatelic evidence. It explores the ways in which the British empire as a working world system was underpinned by the Imperial...

How Busy is Nidri?
(04 Sep 2008)
Compared to other resorts in Greece? An idea of numbers of restaurants/bars would be good as looking for a quiet holiday and not sure Nidri is the place.

Not sure where you would be comparing to. We have been to some of the less touristy islands (though still developed) like Samos and Lesbos and we found Nidri a bit a disappointing. The main street was...

Chinatown
(15 Oct 2008)
What do you think of London's Chinatown? Opinions vary drastically: some say it's the best Chinatown in the world, others say it's a tourist trap. So:
a) How genuine (i.e. Chinese) is it?
b) What about prices? Is it an expensive area? (I mean, what's the point of having a Chinatown if you can't find great bargains there?!)
c) Is it worth a visit?
d) Are there any restaurants / shops in Chinatown that you recommend?

Six years in Guantanamo
(24 Sep 2008)
Sami al-Haj walks with pain on his steel crutch; almost six years in the nightmare of Guantanamo have taken their toll on the Al Jazeera journalist and, now in the safety of a hotel in the small Norwegian town of Lillehammer, he is a figure of both dignity and shame. The Americans told him they were sorry when they eventually freed him this year – after the beatings he says he suffered, and the force-feeding, the humiliations and interrogations by British, American and Canadian intelligence offi...

10,000 miles. 3 weeks. Lets plan my US Trip
(15 Oct 2008)
I moved this from Cafe TPF hoping it would get some more attention in this section
I am planning to go around the US next year. Just driving. Ok, maybe the mileage is off, but at least I could say the however many 'extra' miles on my car are true 'highway' mile
I want to ping-pong the US. I live in NC. From there to Maine and New Hampshire, down the border to New York to see Niagra falls. Couple days there, along the Great Lakes in Michigan Through Chicago (always wanted to go through it) then t...
