Faulty Stat = poor MPG!?
(04 Nov 2008)
Might be a bit of a stupid question, or obvious even, but just been thinking about this and wondering do the following have any relationship. The car has had a faulty stat in it for a good while. It took about 20mins of constant driving for it to come up to temp on the gauge usually. MPG has also been down a fair bit and probably for the same amount of time.
New stat has gone in and temperature is coming and going like it should now.
Does the fact that the temperature was staying cool mean that a...

CMOS battery problem or faulty clock???
I've recently purchased a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ120P in US. I have a full year limited warranty but since I don't live in US I can't make use of it.
My system clock does not run when my laptop is turned off and on too, i.e. it will show the time and date when it was last set on Windows XP. For example: if I boot at 10:00, set correct time at 10:05 and
shutdown 10:30, the next time I start the notebook the time shows 10:05. Also when I enter the BIOS the clock...

Faulty Ram
(30 Oct 2008)
A couple days ago, I bought a some more ram for my computer. I tried to buy ram that was exactly like the stuff I already had, but the new pair I got had slightly different timings than my original pair (I'm not sure if this really matters though).
So I installed the ram, and my computer wouldn't start up (this was on xp). I didn't really think about it at the time, so I went ahead, took out the newly installed ram and then went and installed windows vista (which I had also just bought).
Once I...

Need some opinions on my limp mode
(17 Nov 2008)
I started hitting limp mode 2 days ago when I went to lunch. During my morning commute in, the car (Golf IV) was fine. I posted my analysis so far on the Diagnosing limp mode thread (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.p...&postcount=108) but it seems no one looks at it anymore. What say the local folks:
>>
Been getting limp mode and my boost gauge read 28 psi yesterday, yikes! I replaced all the vacuum hoses with silicon McMaster hoses a couple of months ago so it should not have leaks. Tr...

Opinions on buyer /motherboard
(25 Oct 2008)
Hello Everyone,
I have a strange predicament that I needed to get some opinions on.
Sold a motherboard that I've not had a single issue with-ever. Packaged it up in the anti-static bag, put it in it's original box, then placed it in a larger box with 3" of peanuts on the bottom and the top.
Once he received the board he emailed me to let me know that he wasn't sure if the board came from me or Newegg due to it's pristine condition.
Now, he say's he can't get the board to post, fans come on,light...

Opinions on Anti-Static Packaging -
(26 Nov 2008)
I always get a feeling of dread when I receive a delicate electronic component wrapped in plain bubble wrap!
Most times everything is OK, but the few problems I've had have always been sent wrapped in plain bubble wrap without any anti-static protection, no matter how well it's been packaged to protect against bumps.
It could be that the item was a dud to start with, but the packaging just throws another spanner in the works and makes it really hard to troubleshoot the problem. And even though I...

Butters 170C Wire Feed advice thoughs and Opinions please
(05 Dec 2008)
A few days ago I bought Butters 170C...MOST DISSAPOINTED in the wire feed mech. It looks AND SOUNDS like something from Toytown. At higher powers, the feed doesn't behave too badly BUT turn the thing down to the lowest possible setting to do thin stuff the motor in the unit is so unstable it just cant move the wire through at a constant rate; there just isnt enough torque in the motor. Out of curiosity I opened the cover up to see what they had used. To my horror I saw a tiny little cheap Chin...
