Ductless heating/air conditioning vs. Duct heating/air conditioning
(25 Nov 2008)
Hello everyone:
We just purchased our first home and the house does have a hot water tank, however, is only equipped with baseboard electrical heating throughout the house. We wanted to upgrade our heating to either going with the expensive(installing duct work throughout the house) or considering going with the cheaper(installing the ductless system for both airconditioning and heating the house). Wanted to get any views from professionals or other homeowners that have the same conumdrum. In th...

SVO/WVO Tank Not Heating
(14 Nov 2008)
I am running an old Greasel (now Golden Fuel Systems) two tank svo system in my 2001 Golf TDI. I bought the car from a friend with the conversion done and when I bought it in June the tank was heating. As of late, however, I have noticed that the VO tank is no longer heating and the coolant lines that run to and return from the tank stay cold.
The system was installed at a Golden Fuels site in St. Louis and they set it up with the hot coolant line running to the tank teed of the heater core line...

How cold are your rooms WITHOUT heating?
(30 Nov 2008)
As the cold weather is here, I have been doing a bit of wondering about how cold peoples rooms are before the heating goes on.
Our kitchen extension has a flat roof as does one of the bedrooms and they seem to be noticeably colder than the rest of the house even when the heating is on.
We are thinking about having a proper pitched roof put on these but are trying to weigh up the cost involved against the saving on heating. Also our hallway is very high, (beautiful to look at) and so there is a l...

Heating your shop
(22 Dec 2008)
With so many pens being showed in the show of you pen section got me to thinking about if people are heating their shops or not. I was wanting to start turning again, but with it in the teens outside I just can't get myself to do it. My "shop" is half of a 2 car garage and needless to say it's COLD. Can't do a CA finish so I figured I would turn some acrylics, but don't want water sitting in my sharpening wheel this cold for fear of freezing and cracking the wheel.
So what are you doing?
Just de...

Heating my Garage
(03 Dec 2008)
I have got a one and half car garage. Probably around 16 X 25 or something like that. Not exactly sure.
I am looking at diffent options for heating it.
So far I am leaning toward Natural Gas Radiant heat. Anyone have this type of heat. Does it use a lot of Nat. Gas. The reason I like this option is because I don't need to cut chimney into the garage roof.
I found one by "Mr. Heater" It is around $400.00
Just looking for opinions, advice, concerns, complaints.
Whatever you think will help my rese...

Tell me if this heating method sounds good?
(02 Nov 2008)
Ok so im going to buy a young cornsnake in a couple of days and ive been doing some thinking about different types of heating and lighting. I have a ten gallon tank so far. I want to buy a UTH and put it on one side of the tank while using Aspen bedding throughout the whole tank. Right above the UTH should i use a flourescant or incandesant light source or none at all? If i should use two sources should i have them on at the same time, and maybe with the UTH connected to a thermostat? Please hel...

Electric heating/hot water
(05 Dec 2008)
A client of ours has a block of flats where the pressure of the gas supply is deemed insufficient for the boilers to run correctly.
They have asked us to supply and fit a 3Kw storage water heater in the kitchen to provide hot water and 3 x 2Kw convector heaters to provide heating as a temporary fix until the gas pressure is sorted.
They have also informed us that they have asked another contractor to fit 9Kw showers in the bathrooms.
Thats an additional load of 78A per flat.
The flats are suppli...

alternate ways of heating workshops
(29 Oct 2008)
i was talking to an electrician on one of the jobsites i was working on about lighting my new workshop. and he recamended using hid lighting with vented reflectors with inline fans pulling the heat from the reflector and blowing it out at the floor. he really sold me on the idea. he was telling me as for lighting the shop it isnt the most cost efficent but in the cold months it could help warm the shop quite efficenctly. i knew these lights produced alot of heat but how well? i was greatly surpr...

Central heating flushing and descaling
(18 Nov 2008)
Hi everyone!
I was wondering if you could all spare me 1 minute of your time by taking part in this poll. It is totally for my benefit so I don't mind if you don't want to read on.
If you are still with me....I am thinking of starting my own business using a Power Flush machine to clean out central heating systems of domestic properties, and I was just wondering if there would be a market for it.
The process involves connecting a small machine (about the size of a hoover) to one of your radiator...
