1. Do you care about the homeless?   (25 Dec 2008)
Prompted by this article: Ritzy Town Sued Over Treatment Of Homeless ACLU Says Laguna Beach Ban On Sleeping Outdoors Is Unconstitutional Civil rights attorneys filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against this exclusive coastal town and accused its leadership of engaging in a campaign of harassment against the homeless. The American Civil Liberties Union alleged in its lawsuit that a city ban on sleeping on the street is unconstitutional, particularly because there are no year-round city-sponsored sh...

2. Opinions on Japanese culture.   (23 Nov 2008)
Hi all, I am doing a paper for school on the Japanese culture. I have found a lot of resources online, some books, etc. However, I dont know anyone from Japan, nor do I know anyone that has been to Japan. I am just looking for some opinions and brief descriptions of the Japanese work culture (i.e. typical work week, work ethics interesting differences between Japan and the US etc.), Japanese homelessness, and the Japanese education system. Nothing too in-depth. Just key facts, things that are un...

3. Don't forget, YOU may end up homeless and you will end up gettingspat on ...   (27 Dec 2008)
On Dec 24, 12:34 pm, Quote: : "Shawn Hirn" wrote in message ... I think it sucks, but it seems to me that in many situations, employees can see the writing on the wall. Unless the bosses are cooking the books, when business drops significantly, any employee who doesn't notice that and doesn't start thinking about his or her job security is living in an alternate reality. True. Newspapers are notorious for folding with very little advance notice. In Dec. 1991 the Dallas Times Herald announced its...

4. Dying boys last wish is to help the homeless   (27 Nov 2008)
http://cbs11tv.com/health/Brenden.Foster.dying.2.867696.html Quote: : LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― An 11-year-old boy's dying wish to feed the homeless is becoming a national movement. Brenden Foster isn't afraid to die. He says he just wants to make a difference, before his time comes. "You doing O.K. baby? Tired? You sleepy?" Groggy and medicated, Wendy Foster's little boy is having a rough day. Doctors gave 11-year-old Brenden Foster two weeks to live. His two weeks were up days ago. "I'm thinking I h...

5. 11 year old's dying wish: Feed the Homeless.   (10 Nov 2008)
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/...last.wish.komo Wow. Last wish is to feed a homeless camp, when most people think about what they want for themselves. "I'm gonna have a good time and until I go, will keep having a good time." Hope I can be half as brave as that kid when it my time to go.

7. What does it mean to "work"?   (15 Dec 2008)
This is something I'd like to get a broad-ish range of opinions on, because I think it's far more than an academic question. Although I hardly think I can derive a mass line from GBS posts, I think opinions here will be much more valuable than elsewhere on SA. Sometimes people talk about "loving their job." When they say that, I always wonder what they mean; do they mean that they would do it even if they weren't paid? Do they mean that it is more enjoyable than other jobs they have done before?...

8. Something to Think About   (20 Dec 2008)
Well, we've come from a heafty income to food stamps in just five months. My husband still has no job, I guess we expected that since it's December and no one hires in December. But, I'm getting the feeling January won't be much better. Well, 09 isn't looking too great according to most calculations. So, I went to get food stamps today. Don't fell bad for us, we aren't hungry I just thought since we qualified might as well get it. We are current on all our bills (thankfully we paid off almost al...

9. Thinking about Steely, AOG others in their   (29 Nov 2008)
situations or similar situations. After reading Steely's post and AOG's post the past couple of days. It got me thinking about kids who have serious mental issues. Even like Linda's KT is she capable? What will happen to her when she turns 18 if she is not ready? Can WM stay where he is forever? The kids who are not capable of living on their own. I do not know if AOGs' GFG is capable living on his own. Steely's M... I think he still needs lots of time. Just from talking to her and reading the p...

10. Should I prioritize humanitarian charities over the arts?   (04 Dec 2008)
An ethics question: Should I give only to the most serious causes, or is it OK to make room in my charity budget for groups that benefit society in less tangible ways? I put aside 10 percent of my net income each year to give to charity. I think of it as a tithe, though I'm not a church member and don't give money to one. But I think the Bible basically had it right on that figure being a good rule of thumb for helping others. However, I struggle with how to give away the money. The most serious...
