Name based virtual hosts - anything I should know?

Name based virtual hosts - anything I should know? Hi
I'm aware that millions of websites using shared hosting are configured with name based virtual hosting.
I'm just wondering now how name based vhosts could be a disadvantage for hosting our websites?
Currently we have a static IP address for each website, apache configured with vhosts for each of these IP Addresses.
I was thinking about re-configuring to name based vhosts, use up less IP Addresses and only have one or two for domains to point...

Do most web hosts offer backups?
(19 Nov 2008)
My current web hosting service does a nightly backup and keeps 1 weeks worth of them. They also do a weekly backup that they keep a month's worth of plus a monthly backup that they keep 12 copies of for each month.
I had the idea that most web hosts do something similar or at least do backups. I do my own backups at least once a week and if I do major changes to my website much more often.
For several reasons though I'm changing to a new web host. I have done my research and BlueHost comes out v...

Budget and/or Free Hosts
(25 Dec 2008)
Hey guys, this is going to sound really strange, but I need your opinions on decent free hosts that have FTP and no ads. Also, if you guys know of any, I would appreciate a heads up on any hosts that offer plans ($1-4/month) with at least 10Mb, FTP, and don't need a domain.
The scenario is that I have a bunch of teachers at our school who need to get grades online for parents, but aren't being provided hosting space by the district. I have a way for them to FTP from school through the proxy, and...

free hosts...
(06 Jan 2009)
Okay so my old domain name was hosted by yakkel that new free hosting site. Its been very popular and it seemed to have worked for me. But what do you think about it? I didn't use a ton of space or a lot of bandwith and i didn't host a lot of subdomains so I don't see why i could have had an issue but what is your take also on free hosts in general?

Amusing To Think About, Though Of Course it Won't Happen....

Thanksgiving is next week, and President Bush could make it a really special holiday by resigning.
Seriously. We have an economy that’s crashing and a vacuum at the top. Bush — who is currently on a trip to Peru to meet with Asian leaders who no longer care what he thinks — hasn’t got the clout, or possibly even the energy, to do anything useful. His most recent contribution to resolving the fiscal crisis was lecturing representatives of the w...

You'll never guess what I found in my hosts file
(04 Jan 2009)
So, I've noticed for a while now that torrent sites like ThePirateBay and Mininova have been giving me these login prompts when ever I try to vist them. Knowing that neither of these sites would ever require a crude login just to access their homepages, I figured it had to be something nasty on my machine. After digging I around, it occurred to me it had to be my hosts file that was restricting access to these sites. Guess how surprised I was when I opened it up in Notepad++!
I think it was modi...

How Talk Show Hosts Inspire Hatred and Fear
(27 Nov 2008)
Former right-wing radio talk show producer Dan Shelly reveals the secrets of the trade in an article in "Milwaukee Magazine." Some excerpts:
"To succeed, a talk show host must perpetuate the notion that his or her listeners are victims, and the host is the vehicle by which they can become empowered. The host frames virtually every issue in us-versus-them terms. There has to be a bad guy against whom the host will emphatically defend those loyal listeners."
"Forget any notion, however, that radio...
