graphic design: Core Duo or Quad-core?
(03 Jan 2009)
I'm looking into an upgrade of my system soon, which is now an AMD X2 4200+ with 2 gigs of RAM on an ASUS I-don't-care-which-type mobo. Gonna be switching to an MSI mobo with 4 gigs of DDR-800 RAM and a new CPU. For the latter I have two options: an Intel E8500 or an Intel Q6600.
Right now I'm still rooting for the E8500 as it gives more per core (3.16 pc vs 2.6 pc) which I think is better for rendering, but if there's other opinions, I'd like to hear them. Btw, I don't game at all, if that's of...

Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 vs Core 2 duo T5670
(18 Oct 2008)
I've been looking at laptops recently to help pick one out for my sister. She needs a new laptop and only uses it for web surfing, emails, office related tasks (Words, Excel, publisher, etc) as well as watching dvds and tv shows online. So she doesn't need alot of power, however, because she uses it to watch shows, a 15" screen would be ideal and the small netbooks are out of the question. Also she only wants to spend $500. My parents are going to pitch in to help as part of her birthday/christm...

Opinions, Intel or AMD build? - Building - Desktops
(14 Nov 2008)
Ok so I am building a new PC this sunday...
Got kinda a rough idea of prices thanks to rounding off from a few sites and memory from last computer fair. These are the two builds I am interested in.
Open to suggestions on the buying parts etc aswell, appreciate any ideas XD
*Note, -Generic- means the best buy I can find there on the day, not crappest, cheapest version. These are only rough price indexes.

Quad-core or Dual-core ? Which one do I pick ?
(29 Oct 2008)
First, let me say that I am taking a shot at this, please feel free to suggest things I missed. Of special interest, are a list of software and games that are multi-threaded, so please post those, and I will update the master list here.
So, the first thing you need to think about is what software will I be using ? If its primarily on the multi-threaded list, or you want to be prepared for new software that IS multi-threaded, go for a quad. Below is my short list(soon to be updated, please valida...

Any thoughts/opinions/pitfalls on the new Intel i7's?
(07 Jan 2009)
Just as title really.. Price wise, they seem awfully good value, and I was wondering what the cons were. The only ones I can really see are the need for the new mobo's, and RAM which are more costly than a Core 2 Duo setup.
I'm moving up from an aging 3200xp.

What do you think about this offer?
(22 Dec 2008)
Hi guys, it's been a while since I posted. I just found out that a local shop in my country is selling complete computers, really cheap, so I figured maybe I'll just buy a new one (my budget is low atm). Tell me what do you think about this:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 2.26GHz
Mainboard: PCCHIPS P55G
RAM: 2GB Kingston DDR2-800
HDD: Samsung 250GB (7200RPM)
Reader: DVD-RW with LightScribe, LG.
Case: Common case with a 400W PSU.
Price: US$ 364.00
What do you think? I know PCCHips is not that great,...

Snow Leopard and 32-bit Intel Macs
(02 Nov 2008)
Hi there. I am a newbie, so I'll start with a 'hello'!
I wondered what people's opinions are on the future of 32-bit Intel Macs are. I have a Core Duo BlackBook, and am a aware that they were relatively short lived. Everyone seems to be focused on PPC's being left out of 10.6, but although Core Duos will probably run, at what price?
It seems to me that each generation of CPU inside Macs has had at least a 3 or 4 year life (G3, G4, G4, Core 2 Duo), but the Core Duo was only in Macs for 7 months....

Thinking about getting Mac mini
(22 Dec 2008)
So my wife's/kids PC mainboard is toast.. been cranky a while, but finally not even post.. So I got to thinking of buying an ITX board (Intel G45) for her E6600, and a neat wee case (Apex M100), well when I start adding up the price, I am defininately in the range of a used Mac Mini. I also thought that all the photo album stuff she loves, will be cool with iPhoto.
My question:
Is there a big difference in performance between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo models?
Is 1gb RAM enough, or spring for 2gb?...

Intel BadAxe Upgrade advice
(02 Dec 2008)
I'm wanting to dp some upgrades to my current computer, which is about 2 years old at this point. My current configuration is:
Intel D975XBX mainboard
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 CPU
2 gb Corsair DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon X1950
My current idea is to do an upgrade as cheaply/easily as possible, so I'm thinking about just replacing the graphics card with a Visiontek Radeon 4850 or Nvidia 9800 series and replacing the CPU with a Core 2 Extreme QX6800 from eBay (upgrading from a Core 2 Duo to a faster Core 2 Qu...

Multiple Cores 101 and DoW2
(04 Nov 2008)
Can anybody explain to me some processor fundamentals.
Thinking about getting a 2Gig duo core in the January Sales.
Can anybody explain the whole single, duo, quad core thing as im a little unclear about power increases and how they improve the running of your system.
I know that a duo is not twice as powerful as single core and the same goes for a quad not being twice as powerful as a duo as the cores allocate up jobs to different cores.
Also how much luck would I have running the following Gam...
