Considering retiring Welcome To Macintosh -
(15 Dec 2008)
Hey everyone! As a lot of you already know, for the past almost 3 years, I've written the Welcome To Macintosh column on Low End Mac. I'm at a point now whether I'm considering retiring the column altogether. There's a few reasons why I'm considering it:
1) There seems to be fewer people using older Macs, or at least there's not as many people that use older Macs visiting Low End Mac.
2) My opinion of Apple has done a complete 180. I supported Apple for 21 years straight. I can no longer in good...

Macintosh Computers - Good, Bad or Indifferent?
(31 Dec 2008)
I ran across this blog the other day. It got me wondering...
I've never owned a Mac. Although I have considered buying one, I've always been held back by what I consider to be high prices. The major strong suit of the Mac is OS X. The hardware, not so much it seems. Mac owners fall in love the elegant curves and colors of their machines, but what about the reliability? From perusing various Mac sites, it seems that the hardware is rather flimsy and subject to breakage. Or maybe it's just because...

Apple's most revolutionary product?
(01 Dec 2008)
Here's a tough question for y'all: think hard and tell me, what do you think is the MOST revolutionary product that Apple has made?
And yeah, over the years they've produced a lot of innovations.... Macintosh computers that started the PC revolution, OS (software that had features years before they were introduced in [or rather copied into] Windows), iPod, iTunes, now iPhone...
So I do know that it's a tough question, but I'd really like to hear some opinions.

Jobs Thumbs Nose At 68K Community
(21 Dec 2008)
Jobs recently told Wired magazine in an interview:
Steve Quote: : "When I got back here [Apple] in 1997 ... I found an archive of old Macs. I said 'Get it away!' and I shipped all that shit off to Stanford. If you look backward in this business, you'll be crushed. You have to look forward."
When reminded of the 1984 Macintosh 25th anniversary, he recoiled at any suggestion of nostalgia and prefaced the above Quote: with the response, "I don't think about that".
Wonder if MacWorld's collector's e...

(17 Nov 2008)
hello welcome to the yospos calculator megathread. this thread is for all discussion calculator related, but i would like to kick it off with a personal question.

Upgrading B4 stereo - $2k to spend
(10 Dec 2008)
I've been into car audio systems for quite some time now, and while I was/am happy with the current B4 setup, I would like something that I can pump a little louder, plug in an ipod, and probably give a bit more bass.
I've been told that amp-ing the present Macintosh speakers is an option, has anyone else done this?
Anyway, if anyone has some opinions on what gear to get in terms of new speakers/headunit/sub/amp for around $2k, please feel free to let me know

Rate my systems by desireablility
(09 Nov 2008)
I have the following Macintoshes in my possestion. All but one of them work, and a few have failed floppy drives, but that's not the point. I'm just wondering what everyone thinks about their overall desireability from their own collection standpoint - assuming that you all start again from nothing. Can you rank what you would want most to least?

Apple Announces Last Year at Macworld, No Steve Jobs Keynote
(16 Dec 2008)
Quote: - We knew this year's Macworld was looking grim, but we had no idea how grim: Not only is Steve Jobs not delivering the keynote, Apple says it will be their last one ever.
Instead of Jobs, delivering this year's supposedly final Macworld keynote is Phil Schiller, Apple's senior VP of worldwide product marketing.
While we have confirmed this information with Apple, what this means for WWDC or town halls is unknown. We had predicted that Steve Jobs was preparing his farewell following his h...

Teh decline of keyboard quality
(27 Dec 2008)
What is it with newer keyboards and crappy quality? This current 'board hooked up to the old Dell is prolly from 1997-2000 and it has keys that fail to type unless you push them really hard.
My Apple Pro Keyboard shows a stunning lack of intelligence on Apple's part. So what if they included an extension cable, I bought mine used. It worked with my iMac, but now with my G4 I have to use the longer corded USB Keyboard.
My Apple USB Keyboard, is the mushiest peice of shite I have EVER used, and ha...
