thinking about converting-questions

Hello all.
I posted a thread about wearing hijab a few weeks back and got a lot of support. I've been thinking deeply about converting to Islam, but I have a few questions that are making me hesitate. Any help and guidance would be wonderful.
First of all, would it be offensive to try a sort of trial-run before I make shahada? Like, doing the daily prayers and reading the Qur'an before deciding anything.
Also, I'm a very musical person. Is music prohibitted in Islam? I've found answers both for...

I am an Independent voter, because I like to be unbiased when choosing a President. I grew up in Texas as a Christian and was fed all Republican beliefs, but I don't agree enough with that Party to be apart of it! Just was thinking about this topic. From what i've seen the radical right wants to convince the majority of America that being Muslim is now akin to being a Jew when Hitler was in power.
IMHO there is nothing wrong with being of Muslim descent. There are men and women of this religion that fight and die for our country.

I would like to know what they think about buddha? they surely can not say that Bhuddha sent from God or Buddha is a Messenger B'coz Buddha himself denied that he is from God or anything ? This is a question that goes out to the sisters. The reason why I ask is because I'm curious to know how I and other new Muslim men will be and am perceived by our sisters in Islam in regards to being potential husbands. Rather than listing a lot of things that I think will be issues (such as the inevitable problem with parents, and tradition/culture) I'm curious to know more about what Muslim women think about this subject.
