First of all, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Canon user and I own the 40D, 5D and 1DM3. The 40D is my favorite of the three. Before reading the DP review of the 50D I had already decided to keep my 40D and maybe wait for the 60D or maybe get a 5DMII after I read some reviews of it. What I like about the 40D is live view and the results I get from it with the 17-55 IS (on the 40D most of the time and 24-105 on the 5D).
