Thinking about a new gaming machine...
(14 Oct 2008)
So what to do?
Preface the discussion with 1) I'm not in a hurry right now, I can wait; 2) I'll build it for between $2,500-3,500; and 3) it will be water-cooled, and silent.
I'll probably start building early next spring. Hey, I said I wasn't in a hurry!
So what would y'all do? Wait for Core i7 and X58, or use existing tech, like a higher-end Yorkfield Quad and Intel X38/48, or Nvidia 790? Or Intel P45?
This time around, I'm seriously thinking of going ATI instead of Nvidia. I've just had tons...

A U.S. judge on Monday halted publication of an unofficial encyclopedic companion to the popular Harry Potter book series in a copyright case author J.K. Rowling argued would threaten other writers.

(10 Oct 2008)
Quote: : By Tony Hopfinger
Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The Alaska Supreme Court refused to halt an investigation into Governor Sarah Palin's firing of the state police chief, paving the way for tomorrow's planned release of the findings.
The Supreme Court dismissed the case brought by five state Republican lawmakers who sought to stop the probe, claiming it was unconstitutional and tainted by partisan politics. The investigation, known as Troopergate, took on national importance after Republican presi...

Gay-friendly course halted by Abbotsford school board
Catherine Rolfsen, Vancouver Sun
Published: Sunday, September 21, 2008
Abbotsford high schools have been prevented from teaching the controversial new Social Justice 12 course because the local school board wants to review its content.
The elective course, which deals with issues ranging from homophobia to animal rights, has caused controversy amongst religious groups that worry it's too malleable to the individual beliefs of teachers.
One sc...

My brief love affair with oud just came to a crashing halt
(13 Sep 2008)
Last night I went out for my birthday and got moderately smashed with my friends. In the fine birthday tradition of doing whatever shot is offered I consumed a little too much Jack and woke up feeling hungover.
Downed some coffee and went into work, and as I rounded the corner, I smelled something that normally would bring a smile of joy to my face. Someone was wearing oud in my pharmacy.
A lot of it.
We have a new Indian pharmacist who is very pleasant and well dressed, but a little heavy on th...

(08 Sep 2008)
SnitchSeeker reports this morning that:
Today Judge Robert Patterson ruled in favour of Warner Brothers and J.K. Rowling in their copyright infringement case against RDR Books, who were intending to release a Harry Potter Lexicon written by Steve Vander Ark. He said that the defence;
"had failed to establish an affirmative defense of fair use" and publication of "The Harry Potter Lexicon" should be halted."
Very happy news, in my opinion.

Unearthed remains halt cemetery plot sales in Wilmington
(11 Nov 2008)
History repeats itself again in Wilmington. There are some facts missing here relevant to the story. The incidents were covered in a story by Dateline NBC.
The caretaker who went to prison wasn't just keeping sloppy records, he was reselling plots and recycling headstones. By reselling I mean selling some plots three times, burying bodies on top of other bodies in the same grave. He would grind off the names of headstones in the cemetery and then etch a new name on the old headstone. It was quit...

EPA to effeectively halt importation of mini-truck
(18 Oct 2008)
First off I apologize for the length of this post, but it is of the utmost importance that anybody who brings mini-trucks into the US be aware that the EPA have created rules that go into effect December 8th that will effectively stop you from importing mini-trucks.
If you are an importer you may want to seek some legal advice, at a minimum you will probably want to call the EPA guys referenced in the letter below from an exporter in Japan and your elected officials. The EPA is great, our econom...
